Discover Baku: Your Ultimate October Getaway

When I tell people we have booked to go to Baku in October, they look at me so curiously! Some couldn’t locate it on a map and others are so curious why Baku and why October. I thought in the lead up to our trip id share some learnings and some tips and advice from my research. October is the perfect time to visit Baku, the vibrant capital of Azerbaijan. With its mix of ancient history and modern marvels, Baku offers a unique and unforgettable travel experience. Over the next while we will hear more about Baku as Baku is gearing up for the prestigious COP29 conference, set to take place this November. As a key international event addressing climate change, COP29 will bring together world leaders, experts, and activists to discuss and implement critical environmental policies. Events like this of such importance will really shine a light on Baku and all it has to offer.
Perfect Weather
October in Baku is a delight for visitors. The summer heat has mellowed, and the winter chill is still far away. Expect mild temperatures averaging between 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), making it ideal for exploring the city’s outdoor attractions.
Rich History and Culture
Baku is a city where the past and present coexist harmoniously. The UNESCO-listed Old City (Icherisheher) is a maze of narrow alleys, historic buildings, and ancient landmarks. Don’t miss the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, which offer a glimpse into Baku’s rich history.

Just a short drive from the city, you’ll find Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient rock carvings and mud volcanoes. Multiple accommodation offerings

When we started to research our accommodation options, I was really really impressed with the variety of high quality offerings from all the major chains to more boutique hotels, there really is options to suit all budgets and hotel preferences. We decided that the Radisson Hotel Baku was the perfect one for us and we booked our stay there. Located in the heart of the city, the Radisson offers stunning views of the Caspian Sea and is just a short walk from major attractions like the Boulevard and the Old City. The Radisson’s central location was a huge selling point for us and makes it the perfect base for exploring all that Baku has to offer.
Getting there from Dublin
Currently, there are no direct flights from Dublin to Baku. However, you can easily reach Baku with connecting flights offered by several major airlines. Here are some of the airlines that operate on this route:
- Turkish Airlines
- Stopover: Istanbul (IST)
- Turkish Airlines offers convenient connections with a layover in Istanbul. This is a popular route with relatively short layover times.
- Lufthansa
- Stopover: Frankfurt (FRA)
- Lufthansa provides flights with a layover in Frankfurt, giving you a smooth and efficient transfer experience. This is the option we have gone for, however the only downside is the flight departs Baku at 4.30am!! Mega early start but its the way home so we be home early which I do often like.
- Aeroflot
- Stopover: Moscow (SVO)
- Aeroflot offers flights with a stopover in Moscow. This route might have slightly longer layover times but is a viable option.
- Qatar Airways
- Stopover: Doha (DOH)
- Qatar Airways offers flights with a stopover in Doha, known for its excellent service and comfortable layover experience.
- Emirates
- Stopover: Dubai (DXB)
- Emirates provides a luxurious travel experience with a stopover in Dubai, allowing for a pleasant journey with top-notch service.

- Local Currency: The Azerbaijani Manat (AZN) is the local currency. Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s a good idea to have some cash for smaller purchases.
- Visas: Check the visa requirements for Azerbaijan. Many travellers can apply for an e-visa online, which is a straightforward process.
- Time Zone: Baku is 4 hours ahead of Dublin
