The North Coast of Ireland has always been one of our absolute favourite spots for a quick family escape.  There is something about that fresh Atlantic breeze and the sound of the sea that completely resets the soul. Recently, we packed up the boys and headed up to County Antrim for a whirlwind 24-hour trip. We had the absolute pleasure of checking out the newly opened The Marcus Portrush, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. If you are looking for the perfect, effortless base for a North Coast family getaway, let me tell you why this spot needs to be on your radar.

A Stunning, Fresh Transformation

The hotel is located right in a beautifully restored Grade A listed Victorian building from the 1880s on Portrush Main Street. While it completely honours its heritage (you’ll see gorgeous original mosaic signs and period features), the inside has been beautifully renovated into a bold, boutique contemporary haven. The design is inspired by “Marcus,” a fictional comic-book-style adventurer, giving the whole place a playful, free-spirited energy that the kids absolutely loved. Our family room was bright, spotlessly clean, and incredibly clever with its layout—plenty of room for the boys to sprawl out after a long drive without any of us feeling cramped.  We loved the colour scheme and the fresh feeling. Kids loved the Marcus comic and the stick of rock! Very nostalgic! I’m not sure when I last saw one.

Prime Location

Location is everything when you are traveling with kids and especially when its a really short break.  The Marcus completely nails it. Being right on Main Street meant we were just a short stroll away from Portrush’s lively streets and beautiful beaches. We were taken aback but just how bustling the town was on  Saturday evening, the receptionist advised us that there are many good restaurants close by however without a booking it could be difficult to get in. I think the super weather had people out in force.

My youngest didn’t remember his last visit to the Giants Causeway so this was top of our visit. Only about 6 miles from the hotel, so if you’re looking to explore further, the Marcus Portrush serves as the ultimate base camp. You are only a stone’s throw away from the Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, and the historic Old Bushmills Distillery. For golf-loving families, the famous Royal Portrush Golf Club is practically around the corner. We didn’t have to spend half our trip stuck in the car, which is a massive lifesaver for family morale and especially on a weekend where temps reached late 20s, definitely not complaining the good weather really added to the trip.

Because of its prime, central town-centre location, the hotel doesn’t have on-site parking. For our one-night stay, this wasn’t an issue at all since we had very little luggage, and we managed to snag an on-street parking spot just around the corner. However, if you are packing heavy or staying longer, it’s definitely something to keep in mind! The hotel recommends Lansdowne Car Park nearby if street spaces are full.

Exceptional Dining at Nemesis

We had dinner and breakfast at the onsite restaurant Nemesis. After an afternoon of exploring, we didn’t want the hassle of dragging tired kids out to find somewhere to eat, especially given the town that evening was absolutely hopping. Luckily, the on-site restaurant, Nemesis, is an absolute gem. Named after a mythical giant octopus, it serves up world-inspired Asian fusion cuisine using fantastic locally sourced ingredients. The food was absolutely lovely—vibrant, bursting with flavour, and beautifully presented. What really made the night, though, was how accommodating the staff were. We foolishly hadn’t made a booking and the lovely lady who greeted us went out of her way to assist and sorted a table for us a short while later. Which gave us a chance to enjoy the lively onsite bar while we waited for our table to be ready.  I didn’t get to sample them but a family we spoke to at the hotel bar said the cocktails were really nice.

Final Thoughts: One Night Just Wasn’t Enough!

We had such a fantastic stay, but honestly, our only complaint was that a single night just wasn’t enough time to take it all in! The boys were already asking when we could come back before we had even checked out. Between the prime central location, the gorgeous new design, the brilliant food, and the incredibly warm hospitality, it’s a brilliant addition to the North Coast. We left with full hearts, full bellies, and a strong desire to return for a much longer stay next time.
