A Magical Stay at Grand Post Hotel, Rovaniemi – A Winter Wonderland

During our recent trip to Finland, having spent many hours pouring over TripAdvisor reviews we settled on  Grand Post Hotel in Rovaniemi, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our Arctic adventure.  Tucked right in the heart of town, this hotel is a hidden gem that made our Lapland experience smooth, cozy, and unforgettable. It was originally a post office building from the 1950s which has been renovated to a very high standard.  A huge feature of this hotel is the original working lift which is almost a tourist attraction itself.

Update 2025: 

Just a couple of update since I wrote this:

  • The Hotel has now been renamed Postmaster Hotel.
  • There are plans to have a bistro and bar for the Winter months, in my view this will really elevate this hotel, been able to grab a drink or light bite as well as cooking in the mini kitchens is a huge plus

Home Away From Home

What really stood out for us was the fully equipped kitchen in our room. After long, adventure-filled days, being able to prepare a warm meal or even just a quick snack for the kids was a lifesaver. It gave us the flexibility to eat on our own schedule and saved us from always having to dine out—perfect for families like ours. We used the Wolt app for delivery of groceries when we arrived and pizzas another night. It was super quick and efficient.

The included breakfast each morning was a lovely touch. It featured a great variety of both continental and Finnish options, and we always left the breakfast room full and ready to take on the day. The coffee alone was worth getting up for!

Comfort Meets Convenience

Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and designed with a modern Nordic flair. There was plenty of room for the kids to sprawl out, and we never felt cramped. It’s clear this hotel was designed with families in mind. Everything from the large bathroom to the clever storage made our stay feel effortless. Some rooms also come with Saunas which would be a lovely addition.

The location of the Grand Post Hotel couldn’t have been more ideal—just a short walk to Rovaniemi’s shops, cafes, and attractions. It’s also conveniently close to the railway station and bus stops, making it easy to get around without a car or having to rely on taxis which are expensive in Rovaniemi.

Stay Lapland – Adventure at Your Doorstep

A huge bonus of staying at the Grand Post Hotel is that it’s home to Stay Lapland, a fantastic local tour company. We booked two unforgettable excursions through them: a husky adventure and an ice fishing snowmobile adventure on separate days. I do have separate post coming on these so do check back in the meantime there is loads of highlights saved on my instagram.

Both experiences were incredibly well-organized and family-friendly and kids and adults loved every minute. The husky safari was pure magic—the dogs were energetic and well cared for, and gliding through snowy forests was like stepping into a fairy tale. The next day’s snowmobiling tour was just as thrilling. Kids rode in the sled while the adults drove, and the views were breathtaking. While we didn’t catch anything fishing we still loved every minute.

Having Stay Lapland based right at the hotel meant no stressful planning or commuting—we literally stepped out the door and onto the bus for our next adventure. I can’t explain how handy this was when traveling with kids.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a trip to Rovaniemi, we wholeheartedly recommend Grand Post Hotel. Between the comfortable rooms with kitchens, generous breakfast, prime location, and access to top-notch tours through Stay Lapland, it offers everything you could ask for in a family-friendly winter escape.

We left with frozen fingers, full hearts, and a strong desire to come back again someday. And its not if its when!

We have been sharing details of our 1970s house renovations for the last number of years. We are almost near the end of this epic project so we have moved to the outside area now.  Our kids are nearly teens so our needs are evolving in terms of how we use the space in our home.  In addition since we began renovating work from home for me has been a regular feature in our lives. So….to  address the ever changing and evolving needs of our family, we opted for a garden room. Whether it’s a quiet spot for remote work, a playroom for the kids, or a multifunctional retreat, a garden room offers a smart, stylish solution and it ticked all the boxes for us, in addition to future proofing as the kids grow up.  For us its more than just an extension of our home, it provides a dedicated space that evolves with our family’s needs. A Family-Friendly Evening at Cosmo Liffey Valley: A Dining Experience to Remember

I have been in Liffey  Valley shopping, many (many) times and each time I say to the kids “next time we are down we must try Cosmo“.  However we finally put our plan into action and on a bank holiday Sunday evening made the short trip down to Liffey Valley with empty tummies ready and excited to try the food I had heard so much about. Living pretty close to Liffey Valley, Cosmo is pretty famed locally for its buffet offering and its legendary birthday celebration!! ( I wont spoil this but do grab a gang and go for your birthday – you will thank me later!)

If you haven’t heard of Cosmo, it’s a around the world buffet experience with over 150 dishes including live cooking demonstrations that even the pickiest will find something they like or would be open to trying. It is fixed price at €23.99 Monday to Thursday and €24.99 for weekends and Bank Holidays. Kids under 155cm eat for €12.50 and a nominal charge for kids under 3.

So…having recently spent an evening there as a family,  here’s what we thought!

First Impressions

The moment we stepped into Cosmo, we were greeted by friendly staff and a warm, inviting atmosphere.   We arrived  around 6.30 on a Sunday so lots of shops were closing so naturally the restaurant was busy, in fact we were lucky we had a booking as they were not taking walk ins at that point.  Despite being busy it was very well run and there were people happy to wait at the reception for a table to become free.  The restaurant is spacious, with a modern design and an open-plan layout that makes it easy to navigate with kids. The layout is really clever actually as despite being really big it doesn’t feel like that when you are there sitting down.   The kids were really looking forward to this and the excitement really kicked in when we saw the buffet stations—each one offering different cuisines from around the world.

The Food: A Global Feast

One of the highlights of Cosmo is the sheer variety of food available. Whether your family loves Asian, European, or classic comfort foods, there’s something for everyone. Our little ones were thrilled with the pizza and pasta station, while we enjoyed fresh sushi, aromatic curries, and sizzling teppanyaki cooked right before our eyes. I don’t think words can do it justice you really do need to see it for yourself. The food is laid out in theme and even within each theme there is either a cooking station or a variety of self service dishes.  I headed straight for the Asian section, my husband the sushi and the kids the pizza!

A few standouts from the evening:

  • Freshly made sushi – Surprisingly good quality for a buffet!

  • Crispy duck pancakes – A hit with both adults and kids. We almost missed these as they are in the corner of the Asian section so do look for them, seriously yum

  • Live cooking stations – Watching the chefs prepare stir-fries and grilled meats added a fun, interactive element to the meal.

  • Dessert heaven – From chocolate fountains to mini cheesecakes, the dessert station was a huge hit, especially with the kids. My littlest man told me not to forget there is both a milk chocolate and white chocolate fountain!

Family-Friendly Atmosphere

Dining out with children can sometimes be challenging, but Cosmo made it easy. High chairs were available, the staff was incredibly accommodating, and the buffet setup meant there was no long wait for food—a huge plus when dining with hungry kids! The lively, bustling environment also meant we didn’t have to worry about keeping noise levels down too much.

Value for Money

Cosmo offers great value, especially for families. The fixed-price buffet means you know exactly what you’re spending, and with so many options available, there’s no risk of ordering something the kids won’t eat. The food quality and variety make it well worth the price, especially if you’re looking for a place where everyone can eat to their heart’s content.

Final Verdict

For a family-friendly evening out, Cosmo Liffey Valley ticks all the boxes—delicious food, a relaxed atmosphere, and a setup that makes dining with kids stress-free. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just fancy a fun night out, it’s a great option that guarantees full bellies and happy faces.
