How to Help Your Child Learn a New Language

Learning a new language from a young age not only prepares children for studying languages at school, but it also improves their overall learning abilities. Studies show that multilingual children have enhanced critical thinking and creativity skills. Furthermore, language skills can lead to more career opportunities in the future.

If you are looking for some advice on how to help your child learn a new language, here are some great tips from an independent school in London

Language practice

To help your child learn a new language, you will need to encourage them to practice daily. This can be done at home using books and online resources, or you could enrol your child in a local language class. Another helpful idea for home learning is using translation posters or sticky labels around your house. This will help your child to memorise words and enrich their new vocabulary.

Online learning

There are lots of fantastic language learning resources available online. Many are free and very easy for children to use. These are a great way to encourage learning through fun and interactive games. Help your child to get set up on your computer, or download an app onto your smart phone or tablet. This way you can take their language learning with you wherever you go.

Television

Foreign-language television programmes can be really useful for children’s language learning. Your child will be able to follow along visually, whilst listening to natural conversation and pause or rewind where necessary. This learning technique will help to improve your child’s pronunciation and sentence structure.

Music

Finally, music is an ideal way to teach children new languages. Studies have shown that listening to songs and singing along helps children to memorise the lyrics. So, why not use the power of music to help your child memorise a new language? If you have younger children you could introduce them to nursery rhymes in your chosen language.

Helping Your Child Choose their GCSEs

Choosing GCSE subjects is an exciting milestone for children; however it can cause a mixture of emotions. It is exciting because children now have the chance to tailor their education around what they enjoy and what they are good at, but it can also cause feelings of anxiety because children worry about how their choices will affect their future.

An independent college in Bath believes that parental support is one of the most important factors at this time. They have helped to put together this helpful advice to help your children with their GCSE choices…

Reassurance

If your child is feeling worried about choosing their GCSEs it is important to take some time to reassure them. Help them to think positively about this new chapter in their education. Remind them that it is an exciting opportunity to focus on the subjects they enjoy the most. The subjects they choose now could even help to form the foundations of their future career.

Conversations

Talk to your child about their options and discuss their favourite and least favourite subjects. This is really important when choosing their GCSEs, because enjoyment of a subject will lead to the best results. It is also a good idea to talk about what they wish to do after school, such as university or a particular career interest. These kinds of conversations will prompt your child to think about their academic strengths and how they could benefit their future.

Research

If your child does have a particular career interest, it can be helpful to research the qualifications required in order to secure a role in that industry. However, it is also important to encourage your child to select a variety of subjects to help them explore and develop a wide range of skills. In doing so, they are keeping their options open in case they change their mind about their career later on.

One of the best things you can do for your child to help them decide on their GCSE’s is collect as much information as possible. Relevant information from the school and online research will help to make the decision making process as stress free as possible.

Top Tips for Making Homework More Fun for Your Child

It isn’t always easy to encourage your child to do their homework; however there are ways that parents can help to make home learning feel more fun.

Follow these helpful strategies from an independent school in Essex to help motivate your child to do their homework…

Create a study space

Pic Credit: Pixabay

To help your child feel organised and inspired to learn, you could create a special space in your home for them to study. Set up a desk area with storage, new stationary and craft supplies. This will help to make the idea of homework seem much more fun. It can also be useful to add a family calendar to the wall to keep track of school activities and events. Your child can use this calendar to add their homework deadlines and any upcoming exam dates.

Join in

Share ‘study time’ with your son or daughter by using it as an opportunity to catch up on some of your own tasks. You could even take an online learning class or use the time for a creative hobby. Sit together in the same room as your child while they complete homework and bring a bowl of snacks to enjoy together. This will not only mean that you are close by if they need your help, but it will also make ‘study time’ feel special.

Make memories

If your child is studying a particular topic at school, you could help to make their learning more fun by organising an educational day out. This could be to a museum, art gallery or a local park. Learning outside of school offers a number of benefits to your child’s education and it will also help to inspire them. Furthermore, a fun family day out will allow you to make some lasting memories.

Show your support

Finally, the more supported a child feels at home, the better you will find they perform at school. Help your child to value their education by demonstrating a positive attitude towards learning. Show your support at home by helping with school projects, quizzing your child on school topics, finding interesting documentaries to watch and praising your child for their school achievements.

Why Do Practitioners Track Children’s Progress?

The first and most basic answer to this question is a simple one: it is required if practitioners want to keep their childcare licence! The second and less basic answer is a more nuanced one – let us take a look at why practitioners track children’s progress and why it is laudable that they continue to do so.

Early Problem Detection

Even the most well-meaning parents can sometimes cover up for their children missing important milestones, because they fear their child will be humiliated by being ‘held back’, because of personal pride, or for any of a number of unfounded reasons, many of them not clearly thought out, but all having the same result: losing the chance for early intervention. While it is certainly true that all children develop at their own rate, there comes a time when ‘late development’ should perhaps be re-labelled into something a little more serious – or at least, something in which remedial action is strongly recommended and enacted. The EYFS tracking program was introduced to help nursery teachers and assistants to pick up on the point where ‘nothing to worry about’ turns into ‘a minor point of concern’ in a timely enough manner that the child’s needs can be catered for.

Painless Remediation

When children well over the age of five are found to be in need of remedial lessons, be it in speech, reading and writing, or numeracy, they can feel humiliated, as though they have been targeted for being different. Sometimes they will feel stupid or slow, and their self-confidence can plummet. School attendance, at this point, will often begin to show the early signs of truancy – sometimes accompanied by parental collusion, as, unable to face another morning tantrum, the parents allow their children to call in sick. From this point, it can become a nightmare for all parties: the parents feel helpless and guilty and can lash out at the school; the teachers can feel beleaguered, often with meagre resources earmarked for far more pupils than they can sustain, and the child’s mortification can worsen.

EYFS can prevent much of this heartache by spotting problems before they become embedded, reassuring parents that it is not their fault as well as teaching them coping techniques, and generally preparing the way for the child to head into the mainstream school system with a strong support system in place.

Adding to the Data

Another excellent reason for tracking children’s progress is to add to the data. The more information that can be gathered using software like https://tinytracker.co.uk/, the better understanding the authorities can gain of exactly how children develop, what delays or slows that development, and what steps, if any, can be taken to ensure that the child is given as best a chance of success in mainstream education as possible.

While it is a legal requirement that registered nurseries and childcare providers use the EYFS programme, the reasons for doing so are laudable and worthy of adherence. Why do practitioners track children’s progress? Because it helps every child have a successful education – which offers tremendous hope for their future lives.

Travel with confidence this year, with these helpful travel tips

Have you thought about travelling alone? Of course, due to Covid-19, travel is somewhat restricted right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start thinking about the next time you head overseas. Maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, or perhaps you want to leave your 9-5 behind and see what the rest of the world has to offer. Whatever your reasons for travelling, those who decide to go it alone are going to need lots of time to plan their dream trip, along with plenty of confidence.

The idea of travelling solo can seem daunting. However, it’s worth remembering that every time we face a fear, we get a little stronger! Whether you’re worried about navigating the airport alone, flying long-haul solo, or you’re worried about your physical health and safety whilst overseas, experienced solo travellers would argue that the best way to boost your confidence is to simply go for it! And in the meantime, check out these helpful travel tips that will help you travel with confidence this year.

Know your consumer rights

You’re probably aware of how fraught the travel industry is right now. Covid-19 means that flights and holidays can be cancelled at any moment. Whether your trip is over a year away or you’re due to fly out this afternoon, it’s not easy to predict what is going to happen next. Understanding your consumer rights can give you the confidence to book your next trip, safe in the knowledge you’ll be able to get a full refund if necessary. Creditfix have created an infographic to help you understand your rights and what to do in the event of a holiday cancellation. Click the link to find out more. Knowing that you’re protected financially in the event of a cancellation or travel disruption will certainly give you peace of mind.

Conduct plenty of research

Don’t worry about spoiling the “magic” of your destination. Researching your destination is incredibly smart and will give you the information you need to make informed decisions about where you’re going to visit, where to stay, where to avoid and how to stay safe. From dress codes to common street scams, tourist hotspots and public transport advice. Conducting research will give you the confidence you need to take your first solo steps overseas.

Keep communication open

Being able to communicate with your loved ones back home will give you (and them) peace of mind. Research how you’re going to keep in touch whilst you’re overseas. Find out about the internet connectivity of your destination. Make sure your smart devices can connect whilst you’re abroad and let your family know when to expect communications from you.

Don’t pressure yourself

While immersing yourself into a new culture is what travelling is all about, don’t be afraid to take comfort in your favourite things. Whether it’s cancelling activities to enjoy reading a book in your hotel room or visiting an international fast-food chain to enjoy a meal you’re familiar with, shopping homegrown brands for swimwear and other travel outfit essentials, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Indulging in home-comforts will give you a much-needed confidence boost, no matter where you are in the world.

Entering the Healthcare Field Post-Pandemic

While everyone was told to stay at home and shelter in place at the height of the epidemic, it was the frontline healthcare workers who worked to keep the medical industry running. Hospital administrators, ambulance drivers, and even receptionists were on the frontline, as they raced against the clock to fight coronavirus, a disease that is still leaving experts puzzled. Anyone considering working in healthcare has to look at the ways that the industry has changed and the challenges that medical professionals face. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect in your future in the healthcare field.

Students in the Healthcare Industry and Distance Learning

hospital

Supplying nurses, doctors, and others in the healthcare industry with critical PPE equipment has saved the lives of countless numbers of people. The demand for healthcare workers was so high that medical and nursing students actually matriculated months earlier in many areas. Students are still participating in distance learning, with more people taking an interest in online MHA programs. Courses of study that were once thought to be impossible to be taught online are actually now fully remote.

How the Medical Field is Expected to Change

In addition to the rise of telemedicine, more healthcare professionals are working in a way to protect everyone around them. Healthcare workers have to be concerned about what they are exposed to, as their families and friends could be at risk. The same procedures involving frequent hand washing and wearing a mask are following by healthcare professionals while at work and in their personal lives. Now that people in present history have seen the ravages of an epidemic up close and personal, they are dedicated to stopping it from happening again. Science has advanced much since the time of the Spanish flu. If the healthcare field can get it right this time, a pandemic of these proportions will never occur again.

And not forgetting behind the scenes, it’s not just the delivery of medical needs that have been evolving at a rapid pace. It’s also true of the admin side of most healthcare facilities, and these electronic medical record solutions have revolutionised the admin side of medical care allowing more time to be spent on patient care and less time dealing with paperwork.

Healthcare has also had to keep pace with changing and updating technology in the area of patient management and billing, for example hospice billing company can not only offer billing solutions they are not offering an increased suite of regulatory compliance solutions to aid with delivery the best standard of patient care.

Considering Your Safety in the Event of Another Pandemic Outbreak

Although it was long predicted that the world was due for another epidemic, no one was ready for COVID-19. Medical workers found that they were unprepared and healthcare facilities didn’t know exactly what to do. Now, there are changes that come by recommendation of the CDC. Personal protective equipment is still used by emergency room workers, and it remains hard to come by. New ventilation systems are being installed in hospitals to help keep infections from being spread through the air, potentially infecting healthcare professionals. If you are going to become a healthcare professional, you can be certain that your health will be protected because of these changes being made.

Medical professionals now have a new perspective post-pandemic. Many of them lost family, friends, and dear patients. It has been a very difficult time, but this is how science makes rapid-fire advances. There are several vaccines in the testing stages and scientists worldwide believe that more effective treatments are on their way. What you do in your career can have an effect on the coronavirus pandemic as well as infectious disease outbreaks in the future.

Top Tips for Helping Your Child with their Homework

It’s safe to say that not many children enjoy doing homework. It’s the last thing they want to do when they get home from what seems like a super long day at school. Parents can help their kids with the right words of encouragement and support, resulting in better academic performance all round. I have teamed up with a private school in Hertfordshire to offer you some advice when it comes to helping your child with their homework, which doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a maths genius or science whizz.

By simply showing an interest in your child’s homework and in their education in general, you will have a huge impact on both their attitude to learning and their grades. Ask them what they’re learning about and ask if there’s anything you can do to help. Perhaps they could do with some new revision guides that should be simple enough to find, either online or in a local bookshop. Show your child that you value their education by setting up a dedicated space in the house for their homework that is comfortable, well-lit, and free from distractions. Try and make yourself available during homework sessions so that they can ask you for help if they get stuck. If no-one is around, they are far more likely to get frustrated and give up.

Teach your child the importance of organisation and structure. Enforce some rules about how they spend their evenings to ensure homework is completed on time. Of course, allow them to have a short break and a snack before they open their textbooks, but remind them that each evening, homework comes first. Remember that organisation isn’t just about managing one’s time, it’s also about managing one’s environment. Ensure their homework station is tidy and equipped with all of the necessary study tools and books.

Perhaps you could consider some sort of rewards chart, like for every hour of homework your child completes, they get X amount of pocket money. Use positive language to encourage them and remind them regularly that you are proud of them for working hard and trying their best. Positive reinforcement works a treat when parents are trying to get their child to do something.

5 Benefits of Living in a Memory Care Community

Receiving the news that you or a loved one is now in need of memory care can be difficult to hear. It is a very big change of life, both for the one affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia and for their family too. This is why it’s important to do thorough research before choosing a memory care community. You want to make sure the community works for you, your loved one, and your family, in terms of a great location, quality care, professional staff, and a caring environment.

It’s extremely important to understand the difference between memory care and assisted living. If you or your loved one needs memory care, an assisted living community will not fully meet your needs.

There are so many benefits of living in a memory care community—here are five of them.

  1. Highly Qualified Team

When it comes to memory care, it takes a special type of person to be a caregiver. Not only do they need to be specially trained in all of the disease processes that are associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia, but they need to be patient and compassionate too. These caregivers will also need to fully understand both the physical and emotional distress that those they work with are suffering from.

Because of this, our team members in our memory care community are highly qualified and have special expertise that you likely will not find in an assisted living or at home. Furthermore, these caregivers will treat you or your loved one just like they treat everyone else—with respect, with compassion, and with their best interests in mind. We understand that a quality staff at a memory care community can make all of the difference in the experience you or your loved one will have, which is why we make sure that our staff is top-notch, receives the proper training, and is compassionate

  1. Resident-Centered Care

At a memory care community, the residents are the ones who come first. Caregivers work for them, to ensure they’re receiving the best care possible and are still able to live their lives as best as they can. To guarantee this, caregivers learn each resident’s personal history, which allows them to provide an even more personal and familiar level of care. It is so important to do your reach on the facility, after all you are entrusting them with something so precious. I recommend starting by searching your local area using your preferred search engine, using a term such as Chelsea Senior Living at Suffolk County should yield results that you can review and sift through to find and review the facility you are looking for.  It is also worth speaking to friends, neighbours, colleagues who have loved ones in similar facilities for reviews and assistance.  Research such as this is invaluable.

At BridgeWater, we encourage all of our residents to bring familiar belongings with them when they move into our memory care community to help with the transition. This simple gesture will help you or your loved one feel more comfortable. Additionally, highly qualified team members use special validation techniques to help residents accept reality. In turn, this creates an environment that is caring, comfortable, and safe.

  1. Services and Amenities

A memory care community is more than just a community—it will be your or your loved one’s new home. This is why many different services and amenities are in place to make sure that each resident truly feels as though they’re home, with everything they need in one place.

There are private apartment homes that residents and their families can decorate as they please. There are well-appointed community areas, secure garden courtyards, and specially designed activity programs so that our memory care residents can socialize in a safe and fun way. Assistance is also given in terms of bathing, showering, dressing, and grooming. There are also weekly housekeeping services and 24-hour emergency response monitoring.

  1. Measurable Positive Outcome

First and foremost, a memory care community is a home for you or your loved one. But in addition to this, these communities are meant to help slow the progress of cognitive decline. Because of this, measuring positive outcomes is an important benefit of a memory care community. Here at BridgeWater Assisted Living, we encourage our residents’ communication skills on a regular basis.

Our residents are shown to have improved memory, a greater awareness of sensory and motor function, and a reduced need for any form of pharmaceutical intervention. This helps to decrease anxiety, depression, wandering, and restlessness in our memory care residents. Regular healthcare evaluations are given to each resident, which allows us to track progress and get ahead of a potential health emergency.

  1. Activities Program

Our exclusive activity engagement program at BridgeWater Assisted Living helps create positive wellness and health outcomes as well. Our highly qualified staff is trained in this program too. A combination of music, mindfulness, art, and cognitive therapies are used to keep bodies active, spirits high, and minds engaged. All of this results in residents remaining happy, safe, and healthy.

To supplement this, real-time feedback is also provided to residents and their families. Equilibrium stimulates the brain and measures the feelings of each resident on a daily basis. This allows our team to continually adjust therapies and activities for the resident based on their specific needs, allowing maximum satisfaction and functioning to be achieved.

As you can see, there are many benefits to living in a memory care community. It will ensure you or your loved one is receiving the proper, personalized level of care to help slow the progress of memory loss. It also provides a safe, fun, comfortable environment for all residents to truly feel as though they are home. Additionally, here at BridgeWater Assisted Living specifically, our activities program works even deeper to create positive progress and to allow for more happiness and more positive measurable outcomes.

One important thing to do before choosing a memory care community is to go on a tour. This will let you get a feel for the community, ask more personal questions, and meet the team that will be caring for you or your loved one. We would love for you to come tour BridgeWater Assisted Living. Contact us today. We’d like to hear more about your needs and set up a tour.

Medication-Free Tips To Deal With Joint Stiffness

Joint stiffness is hard to live with, even if there isn’t a severe underlying cause like arthritis. But stiff and achy joints can affect your mobility, strength, and fitness. They can even lower your confidence and quality of life in the long run. Popping a pill to alleviate the pain and inflammation sounds like a shortcut, but it is not a long-term solution. You may experience temporary relief but wake up with the same feeling the next day. Fortunately, you can deal with the issue holistically. Here are some medication-free tips to address joint stiffness.

Eat a balanced diet

Surprisingly, eating a balanced diet goes a long way in keeping joint stiffness at bay. A plant-based diet is ideal because it provides healthy antioxidants, which lower inflammation by eliminating free radicals. Opt for brightly colored fruits and vegetables, as these are the highest in antioxidants and vitamins. You can go the extra mile by adding dietary sources of calcium and vitamin D. Supplementation may be essential if your diet does not give enough nutrients for bone and joint health.

Work out your joints

This one is a no-brainer because moving the joints is the best way to prevent stiffness and maximize mobility. Besides helping with these factors, exercise ensures a healthy weight, which lowers the risk of inflammation and stiffness. But you must consult a personal trainer about the best forms of workout if you are already in pain because going too far can actually worsen the concern.

Consult a chiropractic specialist

Consulting a back chiropractor specialist is another viable solution to address bone and joint stiffness for good. This holistic therapy helps with pain relief and preventive care, so you can deal with the existing problem and prevent it from recurring down the line. You can look for a seasoned specialist by searching for a chiropractor near me with a few clicks. Visit the clinic sooner than later to eliminate joint stiffness without medication and regain strength and mobility.

Rework your posture

A faulty posture is an unexpected culprit for joint stiffness, but it is also the easiest to address. However, people often fail to realize the importance of correct posture and end up suffering from aches and pains. You can make a conscious effort to avoid long hours of sitting and invest in ergonomic furniture to correct your posture. Stretching and walking around your work desk every hour are other ideal solutions for posture correction.

Maintain a healthy sleep schedule

A healthy sleep schedule offers loads of benefits, and relieving joint stiffness is one of them. Getting enough sleep helps you stay active and mobile during the day, which prevents stiff and achy joints. Besides maintaining regularity, you must ensure a comfortable mattress that supports your back and joints. Avoid using gadgets and watching TV in an uncomfortable position because it can cause pain and stiffness.

Medication is not the best way to address joint stiffness because there are better natural solutions. You can try these remedies to stay healthy and pain-free over the years.
