Chill Insurance Home and Lifestyle Survey

With polling day fast approaching, the main question being posed to many of our local candidates is how do we solve the recent spate of burglaries in the area. Figures released by the CSO at the end of 2015 show bulgaries are up almost 10% nationally but even more worryingly up almost 30% in my own locality.

This leads to be some interesting research conducted by Chill Insurance for their Home and Lifestyle habits survey, where they contacted over 400 Irish homeowners and asked them to tell them about their home safety habits (ie do they use a house alarm, what’s the most prized possession in their house, do their pets help with household security etc.) The results both intrigued and shocked me!!chillinsurancesurvey1

  • 57% of people described there home as “very secure”
  • 52% of people saying they always use their house alarm

I am a little obsessive about security and locking up our house following a break in when we had just moved in to our new house last year and the alarm had not yet been fitted. I was pregnant at the time and really got some fright. This next statistic could probably be doubled in my case!

chillinsurance 21 in 5 people spend up to 3 hours a year locking up their home!!

I would absolutely concur with the next finding (after my family of course), 33 % of people said that their family photographs were they most prized possession, jewellery only obtained 9%, I would have thought that would be a bit higher. I know personally there is some jewellery that has been handed down the generations that would rank a lot higher for me than the TV or my phone. (see opposite)

I think for me personally having had a break in really forced me to review my albeit quite lax at the time security arrangements.

Thanks to  Chill Home Insurance for sending me on the survey and associated graphics.

The Little Green Sheep Mattress Protector Review

The lovely people at The Little Green Sheep (see here ) sent us a mattress protector to try out on the big man’s toddler bed. Anybody with a toilet trained toddler knows the importance of mattress protectors!

Now, this is not just any mattress protector rather it’s an award winning product made from extra absorbent, luxury organic cotton and it is 100% waterproof. It really is super soft, there is a lovely texture to it.

Packaging

While I know this is not the key feature of a product, I do like practical littlegreensheepproducts with nice packaging as I like to gift practical products to friends and family but like them to look pretty too. See picture opposite, packaging is lovely and id have no hesitation in gifting this to somebody as a new baby present.

Functionality

In terms of size for our cot bed, its absolutely perfect. What makes the fit so good on this is its flat against the mattress and not fitted which allows the mattress to breathe and also allows the fitted to sheet to still fit snugly over it. Due to this fit it also doesn’t pucker, another plus point and one excuse less for my toddler to use!! Its also not “crinkly” or noisy due to the lovely texture. The big question – does It actually work in terms of being as described – 100% waterproof. My toddler is toilet trained and dry at night time so we haven’t had any toilet accidents on it however we have just come out the other end of a horrible tummy bug. This protector got a tough trial in the Mamma Fairy house. I can happily attest to its functionality as it kept the mattress clean and dry despite numerous (and I mean numerous) vomiting episodes over the space of a few days. I have washed it a few times also since we got it and it has held up really well. I have found in the past mattress protectors can fall apart when washed, not the case with The Little Green Sheep.

Cost

This retails at the higher end of the market at Stg£29.99 direct from their website. Admittedly it is on the pricier side, however you can’t fault the quality, functionality or the nice presentation. I will without doubt be purchasing again to gift to friends or family.

Have you tried any of products by The Little Green Sheep? Would love to hear what you think.

Take care

Mamma Fairy Monthly Favourites – January

Have this post written ages but completely forget to press publish! Two sick babas these past few weeks has me all over the place.

January favourites was easy to pick. The three products were in almost daily use. jan favs

1 – Babyliss curling wand

I love curly hair, however I have long thick (very thick!!) hair so curling products get a run for their money with me.  I bought this after Christmas in the Debenhams sale for €28.  It heats up to 210c which I really need for my thick hair!  The barrel itself is quite wide so again ideal for long hair that gives a loose wave as opposed to the tight Irish dancing curl. The box is long thrown out but I found a picture of the box on line see opposite. babyliss wand

I found this really easy to use, and gives a long lasting loose curl. I finish with a small amount of John Freida smoothing serum and I get 2 days out of the curls. To date this is the only product that has managed to curl my mega thick mane so thumbs up for the Babyliss Curling Wand.

2 Soap & Glory Foot cream – Heel Genius

Its like a tradition now in our house my sister buys me the Soap & Glory set for Christmas! I do love my lotions and potions!! This foot cream actually works.  Im sure like most people I really neglect my feet in the winter months.  I use this a lot especially this time of year to ensure the feet are ready for summer.  It is incredibly moisturising – I put it on going to bed and wear socks over it. It contains menthol which has a lovely cooling effect on your feet too. I have tried a good few of the years but tend to always come back to this one.

I got the current one im using in a gift set however from memory its around €8 in most Boots chemists.

3 MeMeMe Shimmer Stack

I love multi purpose products!! Less products to add to my already jam packed handbag (that’s jam packed with kids toys and snacks!).  The MeMeMe Shimmer Stack contains 5 separate blocks of colour.  This can be used as a bronzer, the individual blocks can also be used as eye shadows and the darker shades for brows.  Products like this are ideal for on the go, rather than taking 3 products just take the one!! The colour intensity in this is really good. I bought the bronze but it does come in gold tones and in a rose tone. mememe

I bought this in my local pharmacy for €15 having gone in for teething gel and come out with a make up blender, this shimmer stack and no teething gel!!! I had previously attended an event there where we were shown how to use these products and at the time had received a number of samples and based on the quality of the other products from the range I had tried I knew id like this one too (see September favourites here).

Let me know if you have tried any of the above would love to know you thoughts.

Netflix – January What we have been watching

As you might remember from previous posts here we were delighted to be asked to join the Netflix Stream Team. We were already fans in the Mamma Fairy house so saying yes to this was easy!

So what have we been watching…..

Team Umizoomi

teamumizoomiMy 3 year absolutely loves this series. Its based around a brother and sister (I have always assumed they are anyway) duo and their robot aptly names Bot who race around Umi City solving problems with maths, shapes, pattern, colours etc. It is very age appropriate for pre schoolers and I can honestly say as far as cartoons go this is very educational and I really don’t mind him watching this one.

Toy Story

The Toy Story films are almost cult favourites at this stage. The 3 years olds Aunt buys him the characters for different occasions, we already have Jessie, Lots-O and Buzz and the excitement and anticipation awaiting the next member is just adorable. Toy_Story_2_title_cardThere are 3 of the films on Netflix and while he watches them all, Toy Story 2 is his firm favourite. This particular one shows the antics the toys get up to when Andy goes to Camp. Woody gets stolen and it’s the toys job to rescue him, the film charts the toys efforts to rescue him from Al, who is portrayed as the evil greedy toy collector.

The Toy Story films are the comfort films in our house, we grab the Toy Story crew (see above!!), the comfy blankie (as its known) and chill out on the couch. Cant beat cuddles with my little men.

Now for what the grown ups have been watching…..

Making a Murderer

Making_A_Murderer_TitleWho isn’t hooked on this??!! We are only a quarter of the way through this ten part Netflix documentary and I can safely say Steven Avery has generated many hours of discussion in the Mamma Fairy house. Is it possible for somebody to have suffered 2 miscarriages of justice?? Its gripping viewing, the ups and downs, ins and outs. Freed after almost 20 years of wrongful imprisonment to find himself back in again for murder. I almost feel sometimes like a member of his legal team searching for that clue or piece of evidence. I’m resisting the urge to watch it all in one go. For now the trials and life of Steven Avery is my Friday night guilty pleasure.

X and Y

We had my husbands teenage cousin staying with us for a weekend recently and I joined them for a movie and takeaway – X and Y was the chosen film. This is a lovely feel good type film. It’s based on the story of Nathan, a young boy with autism who struggles with his emotions, particularly understanding the nature of love. X+Y_posterHe is a maths genius and with the help of a good teacher he gets to the maths Olympiad wher he meets a girl. I wont reveal the rest! While it’s a really good feel good film, It does seem a little too good to be true and predictable. The teenager enjoyed it and liked the message it conveyed to him in relation to his own emotions.

Have  you been watching any of the above, would love to know what your thoughts were.

Note:  I have received a Netflix subscription and an Apple TV in return for writing blog post on what we have been watching.  All programme choices, comments, opinions and views are my own (or my sons where appropriate!!)

Whirlpool and Catherine Fulvio interview

I had intended to write this before Christmas having had the opportunity to put my question to both Catherine Fulvio, Celebrity Chef and Whirlpool Ambassador and John Lowe, an economist but perhaps better known as The Money Doctor however we had some sad news in the Mamma Fairy house so I put blogging aside for a few weeks. Back at it now so you can expect quite the influx of posts from me. Where better than to start but the study conducted by Whirlpool which looked at the impact of modern life on our cooking habits and found that over 40% or 2 in 5 of us skip the evening meal as we simply don’t have time to cook. I can attest to that in the Mamma Fairy house, we both work full time as well as have 2 busy boys aged 3 and 10 months.

In repose Whirlpool have developed a range of new smart technologies, the first one being the new 6th Sense Ready 2 Cook Technology that can heat an oven to optimal temperature literally at the touch of button, rather than waiting up to 15 minutes to fully heat up.

Sounds pretty cool to me, it’s something I’d certainly be interested in. I don’t have one myself therefore I was delighted to be able to chat to Catherine Fulvio to see what she thinks about it.

1 -You are a busy mum yourself, have you found it beneficial on a day to day basis?

Absolutely! The Whirlpool 6TH SENSE ovens have intelligent pre-set options so you can literally cook the perfect pizza or lasagne at the touch of a button. Their settings mean you can almost cook on auto-pilot – and the results are always amazing!

Probably my personal favourite is the dough rising facility of the ovens – they literally halve the time the dough rises, meaning I can put fresh bread on the table so much quicker. I’m a firm believer in baking not buying if at all possible, so this is a massive time saver for me!

2 – In terms of functionality, is it fair to say, there is no compromise on quality of output?

Not at all, in fact I always feel like my meals are in safe hands if they’re cooked with Whirlpool! You can tell the research that’s gone into the 6th SENSE range because their new features address so many common problems. Having the oven switch on to optimal temperature instantly is a godsend, as is the crisp plate that allows perfect baking in the microwave.

3 – What is your favourite recipe to cook when the kids are starving and time is limited?

A pasta bake is always a winner midweek. It’s so easy to whizz it up especially with my Whirlpool oven which can heat an oven to optimal temperature literally at the touch of button.  And it’s even faster if I’m using up the leftovers from the Sunday Roast!

I also had the opportunity to put a number of question to John Lowe, also know as The Money Doctor. John , is a regular contributor in both print and digital media on money saving issues, tips and advice. He also introduced the popular Money Doctor App to help track spending and saving.

1 – A product that is both time saving and money saving is bound to get people interested.  From your own work have you seen this has increasingly become a key concern for consumers?

As they say, time is money and while most people look at the actual product they are using, they sometimes forget the underlying product without which the product they have saved money on, is actually costing a fortune to maintain. Example of this is petrol. How many times do we check the petrol pump prices of the various stations when it’s the actual car that is guzzling the petrol. The oven is a prime example. Saving that pre-heating time is time and money, both of which could be put to better use. Consumers are now looking at saving money from every angle.

2 – In your view is smart technology such as this the way forward for consumers to have more disposable income?

Smart technology is the only way to go. As the first person to sell a mortgage on the interest in Ireland ( 23 years ago ) I have had a love affair with technology ever since. Technology not only betters and improves our lives making it much more efficient but it can also save us a considerable amount of money. You only have to look at online banking and see the significant savings from using technology for your current account and savings. “Let your fingers do the walking” is now passé – gone are the big thick directories it’s whatever search engine you use and you have the information. Sure even before you have finished typing the word, the prescriptive text kicks in and finishes it ! How many of us use the budget planner spread sheet to manage our annual income and expenditure ? The free Money Doctor app is a simple download that tracks all your spending for up to a month to determine if you are overspending, buying too many lattés, newspapers, magazines or in my case chocolate .. only discovered how much I was buying when I did my own spending record – a useful exercise. And free! Just remember income is your number one asset and it has to cover everything.

Many thanks to both Catherine and John for taking the time to answer my questions, who knows I may invest in one when we finally get around to doing up the kitchen (that’s a post for another day!!)

Mamma Fairy December Favourites

The Mamma Fairy monthly favourites for December was an easy one to write. December in the Mamma Fairy house was a month of highs and lows however there were 3 products that were in almost daily use.

viviscalcocoabrown

1 Cocoa Brown Gradual tan

I am naturally quite pale and deep tan doesn’t work too well on me however I do like a nice natural healthy look glow and find the Cocoa Brown gradual tan very good for achieving this. It’s also really pleasant smelling. It’s tinted too when you apply so you can easily see how you are applying it. I find after about 3 days I have a nice glow and I maintain it after my shower each time. It fades quite evenly too which is a big plus as there is nothing worse that patchy faded tan.

I bought mine in my local Tesco however it is readily available in pharmacies.

2 Vivisical Gorgeous Growth Shampoo and Conditioner

I have quite long dark hair and prior to my little men arriving it was glossy and healthy looking. Two kids and little time later it was dry, brittle and not healthy looking at all. I have spent nearly 3 years of buying various different shampoos and conditioners and salon treatments to varying degrees of success. I attended the BloggerConf and in my goody bag was a the Viviscal Shampoo and conditioner. This is new to the market and we got an early sample to try out. I am not over reacting in the slightest when is say this is amazing stuff. After just one use, the difference was noticeable. As you can see from the pic above the tubes are well used, I use both every time I was my hair.

viviscalWhat I have noticed also is that it makes straightening or curling so much easier and leaves the most amazing glossy shine. I knew it made a difference when the Dada Fairy asked me what did I do to my hair that it looked great!

I will keep you updated on the blog when I hear the date its on general sale but seriously you HAVE to try this for shiny glossy hair. See http://www.viviscal.ie/ for more information.

3 Jo Malone shower gel

I wore Jo Malone Wild Bluebell perfume on my wedding day and since then anytime I get the scent it reminds me so much of happy memories of that day. My perfume ran out early in the month and the Dadda Fairy gave me my Christmas present early, included with the perfume was the shower gel. I love love love this fragrance and adding the shower gel certain prolongs the lasting power of the scent.

jomalone

I like perfumes that aren’t too overbearing, this Jo Malone scent fits the bill every time. I know the Dada Fairy purchased mine in Brown Thomas.

Tasty Fish bites – Featuring One Yummy Mummy

I am very lucky that as part of the blogging world there is a lovely community of bloggers who help each other out.  None more so than Award winning Blogger One Yummy Mummy (website here).   I have a fussy eater 3 year and an almost 9 month old. At the moment its dinner for 3 year old, dinner for 9 month old and another for us. In an effort to streamline meal times I hooked up with the lovely Jolene for a recipe idea both my boys would enjoy.  Fish is always a hit with Mr Fussy eater so I was delighted to get a recipe both could enjoy.  I am no Nigella in the kitchen and gratefully accept all help  in this department.

A Mamma Fairy Christmas – Gift Guide PT 2

The latest instalment of the Mamma Fairy gift guide is here including a few ideas here for the men in our lives.

mammafairygiftguide

 1 – George Foreman Grill

We have one of these for many years and I find it so handy for quick tasty wraps and Panini’s. The one pictures is the 5 portion grill and priced around €60. A good investment in my opinion. Most models have the standard features of the grill channel where the grease drains away into a separate tray. This makes for easy cleaning and healthier cooking.   Most also can recline flat for toasties or slightly elevated for meat (enabling the fat to drain).

George Foreman grills are very readily available in electrical retailers throughout the country.

 2 – Remington Gift Set

I know where a certain person reads this he will instantly know this is for him!! Known as the Gentleman’s Gift set! (bet he is having a good laugh now!!).

Remington Gentlemans Toolkit €29.99I think this looks good and is reasonably priced at €29.99 and readily available. Handy shaver, nose/ear trimmer and a novelty mug, sure what more would a “gentleman” need.

3 – Zenji & the Muzzy bugs book

I was first introduced to this book by the author, the lovely Aisli Madden. Aisli herself, wrote, illustrated and funded the book herself (via a Kickstarter campaign) after becoming interested in mindfulness herself. The premise of this book is to purposely promote positive mental health from infancy through the characters as they go about their business incorporating breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques. The illustrations in this book really stand out.

zenjiMy 3 year has really taken to this book, the vivid illustration captures his attention (no mean feat), also for him I find the names and variety of characters hold his interest. Not an easy thing to do  in a book these days, captivate a child like this one does. It would make a lovely and practical present. The book is currently available through Amazon.

 4 – Fuschia Make up.

Fuschia make is an award winning Irish make up brand. Since the early days my sister and myself have been fans having been introduced to the brand just before my own wedding back in 2011. They do a fab mineral foundation with great lasting power. Their lip sticks are also a good safe bet if you are looking for good colour pay off without the Charlotte Tilbury price tag. I am a fan of matte lipsticks so my staple is Bare truth. Totally digressing there but back on track, in my humble opinion a gift of Fuschia gift set, you cant go wrong. The set I am gifting is the colour pop, to a lovely lady who loves her lip stick and is not afraid to experiment with colour (unlike me!!). The gift set is currently reduced to €25 and available from their website.

Bathtime in the Mamma Fairy House

My boys love their baths and what helps I think is that I always try to make the bath time fun and enjoyable. Currently in The Mamma Fairy there are 2 items which we are really loving and add to the bath time fun.

 1 – The Babyswimmer

I am going to admit, I was a tad dubious about this product not really sure how it was going to fare out with the littlest man, for a teeny little thing he really has his own mind. Like anything when it comes to my kids, I educate myself before I use/ try anything out. According to their website the Babyswimmer has a number of benefits for babies including:

  • Improving muscle tone -Building neck, upper body, arms and legs muscles with less stress on baby’s joints while they are having fun;
  • Helps with earlier right/left brain development;
  • Improve their balance and coordination, support their ability to crawl and walk; and
  • Floating relieves constipation and digestion issues, eases colic symptom.

Its an inflatable ring which you sits around baby’s neck with a Velcro strap for really easy putting on and putting off.

babyswimmerIt’s fascinating! It really is, once he is in the water his little legs were going a hundred miles an hour and he was bobbing along. It was adorable. He seemed to really enjoy it. We have been using it in his bath for the playtime element for the last couple of weeks and im going to continue to do so. I grew up with a terrible fear of water so I try as best I can to help the boys enjoy water. My 3 year old goes swimming with his uncle who is a trained life guard and the littlest man will be joining him and will be using his Babyswimmer. If it got thumbs up from his very picky uncle it gets a thumbs up for me. They are going swimming later this afternoon and ill report back on how he got on in the pool with his babyswimmer. I think because its familiar to him to there wont be a bother on him.

2 – Naif Skin care products.

As mentioned above before I try or use anything on the boys I always try to educate myself and how better than being able to chat to the founder of this new baby skincare brand – Naif. Naif is a new brand of baby skincare on the Irish market, it totally natural chemical free designed by two Dutch fathers who coincidentally became father around the same time.  The products use natural oils like cottonseed, sweet almond, macadamia and avocado rather than harsh sulfates and parabens. naif

Having chatted to the guys it is clear that have a real passion for their products, I was curious to know how long it took them to get their products to market. From initial concept to seeing the product on the shelves the guys were explaining to me that this alone took over a year, as they spent significant time on the testing and development to ensure they got the high quality product they envisaged. There are currently 7 products in the range and the founders, Sjoerd and Jochem were filling me in that early next year they are planning to launch a sunscreen (SPF50 with natural filters) and from there to gradually build the range.

naifbabyswimmerThe products I have been using are the softening body lotion and the cleaning wash gel.

Both products have a lovely gently smell, more so the body lotion which contains cottonseed extract. My littlest man suffers with quite dry skin on his ankles and knees so I use this a couple of times a day and it keeps those areas nice, soft and hydrated. What I like about these products are that they are natural, dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic, and PH skin natural. This is so important for babies particularly very young babies whose skin is so delicate. They products are a little more on the pricey side that the average supermarket brand however I don’t have an issue with paying for a quality product. For more information see website here and most of the range is stocked in Boots stores.

Has anybody tried any of the above? If so, would love to know what you think.

Waxing while pregnant – Advice from the experts

This article was originally written for  Mummy an Little Me – See original here

This is a subject which has generated a lot of discussion amongst my own friends, with lots of different viewpoints on whether or not we should or shouldn’t wax while pregnant with the phrase “it would be too sore!” gaining the most air time.

I had the opportunity to speak to Ellen Kavanagh from Waxpert’s on this very topic so I jumped at the chance. Waxperts is a multi award winning waxing salon run by Ellen and her team. Their own products – the Waxperts Wonder pads and the Waxperts Beautiful Body Oil have become firm favourites in the beauty world. For more information see here

wax

On the subject of waxing and pregnancy, there is normally no reason to avoid waxing while pregnant, however if you do have concerns for peace of mind it’s no harm to chat to your consultant or midwife. I asked Ellen what were her top tips for getting as pain-free a wax as possible while pregnant, as our skin can be extra sensitive during those months.

Her expert advice was:

  • Book all your appointments in together and work back from your due date. Even if you have to change them you’ll stick to the overall plan better this way;
  • Keep your skin hydrated. This helps prevent ingrown hairs from occurring but also helps your skin maintain elasticity while it grows and stretches through your pregnancy;
  • And it’s not just your bump that grows, so don’t forget to apply creams or oils to your bum and thighs too!
  • Exfoliating gently with a mitt will help prevent ingrown hairs; and
  • Avoid caffeine before you get waxed too, it only makes you more sensitive.

Honestly didn’t know that about coffee and im a coffee addict myself!!

Another thing about waxing that I really wasn’t sure about was how soon after having a baby can you get waxed although let’s be honest the thought of it can be scary after all we have just gone through!!

According to Ellen, depending on the labour you had, you can get waxed anytime from 6 week post partum. However, that all depends on each individuals healing rate and if there were stitches etc. Again if in doubt no harm in seeking the advice of your midwife. I had 2 C sections and waited quite a while before contemplating a wax as I was firstly, petrified of anybody seeing the scar and secondly, conscious of how sore it might be. Ellen’s expert advice is following a C section its best to wait for around 6 months before you could wax over the scar area. What they do in Waxperts is they work around the scar area. So you can get your brazilian 6 weeks post partum but instead of a landing strip they leave a neat triangle and the scar is hidden there! Genius!

Ellen herself is a busy working mum and I wanted to hear her top tips for combining a successful business and her home life with her young son. According to Ellen the key is when in work to give 100% but when at home she devotes her time to her son. I love this advice and try subscribe to the same moto myself.
Massive thanks to Ellen for taking the time to answer my questions – hopefully this is of some help to those debating whether to wax or not while pregnant.
