I have lectured at University level and professional qualification level for almost 20 years, appreciate that makes me sound old! However what I do have it lots of experience in university life and have had years of feedback on the more practical side of life at university. One point of discussion that comes up so often, what is the best type of backpack for college. I think the old adage rings true here “buy once and buy well“.  Choosing the right backpack for college is more than just picking something that looks good. It’s about finding a bag that can keep up with your busy schedule, protect your belongings, and provide comfort throughout the day.

Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a college backpack. This is based on my own views having spent many (many) years chatting with students and being like a student myself dragging all my documents, laptops, ipad and folders around with me every day.

1. Size and Capacity

The size of your backpack should be proportional to your body to avoid strain on your back. As for capacity, consider your daily load. If you carry a laptop, textbooks, a water bottle, lunch and other essentials, you’ll need a backpack with enough space and compartments to accommodate everything. I am a big fan of compartments in a backpack it means I can sort my stuff  out for different parts of the day without having to unload everything when I’m trying to find something.

2. Durability

College life can be tough on backpacks, have seen many bags strewn around the lecture halls, have even seen some outside bars and restaurants after nights out!  Look for a backpack made from high-quality, durable materials to withstand the rigors of daily use. Reinforced stitching, high-quality zippers, and water-resistant material are all good indicators of a durable backpack. It you live in a temperate climate like we do waterproof should be high on your list, you do not want your laptop, tablet and notes soaked through especially in the days before exams or assignments are due.

3. Comfort

Comfort is crucial, especially when you’re carrying heavy textbooks and your laptop, notes folders etc. Look for a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Some backpacks also offer a sternum strap for added support. Remember a good part of the day this is on your back while you commute to college as well as moving between lecture theatres so you really do want to consider something that is really comfortable.

4. Laptop Compartment

If you’re carrying a laptop to college, ensure your backpack has a dedicated laptop compartment. This compartment should be padded to protect your laptop from damage. I cant stress how important this is, the very last thing you want is costly damage to your laptop or even it getting destroyed along with your college work. As an aside, do back up all your work. You will thank me later!!

5. Style

Lastly, choose a backpack that matches your personal style. Whether you prefer a classic, sporty, or trendy look, there’s a backpack out there that suits your taste. I do see lots of designer bags too so if that is your thing you will see a wide range at shops like Macy’s, however don’t lose sight of functionality for fashion! Your backpack will last you through your college years if you buy sensibly and buy well. Trust me and I say this with (many) years of experience both as lecturer and what some have called me…an eternal student!!

Now that you know what to look for in a college backpack, it’s time to start shopping.  Do you have any more tips to add? If so drop them in the comments below as I’m sure it will help other inform their own decision regarding what college backpack to choose.
