EA SPORTS FC 27 Review: Is It Better Than FC 26?

If you’re a football fan, chances are EA SPORTS FC is one of those games you end up playing way more than you planned. My mother, the OG, the Mamma Fairy herself has (reluctantly!!) handed over the reins to her third baby (the blog!!) to let us write our review of EA Sports FC 27. I must admit we were mega excited to get to trial  this game so early. We were most excited to see what had changed and, more importantly, whether it was actually better than FC 26.

First impressions: FC is back!

The first thing you notice is that FC 27 still has that familiar feel. If you played FC 26, you won’t need ages to get used to the menus or controls, which is great because you can get straight into playing. The graphics and presentation look good, and the matches still have that big-game feeling, especially when you’re playing in a packed stadium. It’s not a completely different game visually from FC 26, but I don’t think it needs to be. For me, the biggest improvements are in the actual gameplay and the extra things you can do. And let’s be honest, most of us care more about scoring a last-minute winner than whether the grass looks slightly better!

Gameplay: The best bit

For me, gameplay is one of the strongest parts of FC 27. Matches feel more engaging when you have to think about your decisions, especially when defending. You can’t always rely on the game to do everything for you, so positioning and timing become even more important. At first, some of the changes take a bit of getting used to, particularly if you’ve spent loads of time playing FC 26. But once you adapt, it makes winning matches feel more rewarding.

Attacking is also a big part of the fun. Creating chances, finding space and getting the perfect pass through to your striker is still one of the best feelings in the game. Of course, there are still moments when your defender does something completely random or your perfect pass goes nowhere near the player you aimed for. If you play FC, you’ll know exactly what I mean! But overall, the gameplay is enjoyable, competitive and gives you plenty of reasons to keep playing.

Career Mode: A reason to keep coming back

Career Mode is one of my favourite ways to play FC, so I was keen to see what had changed. The rebuilt transfer market is a welcome addition, with more realistic player values, active bidding from clubs and new negotiation options. It gives you more to think about when building a squad, rather than simply chasing the highest-rated players. For anyone who loves developing wonderkids and taking a smaller club to the top, Career Mode remains one of the biggest reasons to play.

Transfers are a massive part of the fun, but they can also be frustrating when clubs make strange decisions. Improvements in how transfers work should make managing your team feel more involved and give you more to think about. I also like the idea of having to think carefully about your squad rather than just signing every high-rated player you can afford. For anyone who loves football tactics, developing wonderkids and taking a smaller club to the top, Career Mode is still a massive reason to play.  Being honest compared with FC 26, this is one of the areas I’m happiest to see EA improving.

The Grounds: Something different

One of the exciting additions in FC 27 is The Grounds, which gives players another way to enjoy football outside the usual matches. It offers a more social experience, with different ways to play, including smaller-sided games and opportunities to connect with other players. I think this is a good idea because sometimes you just want to jump on, have a bit of fun and play something different from the usual competitive matches.

It might not be everyone’s favourite mode, and I can see some players sticking to Career Mode or Ultimate Team instead. But having more variety is a positive thing, especially when you’re playing with friends. I’m interested to see how much more EA does with it over time because it has the potential to become a really fun part of the game.

Ultimate Team: Still seriously addictive

Ultimate Team is probably the mode that keeps a lot of players coming back year after year. Building your squad, opening packs, completing challenges and trying to sign that one player who makes your team unstoppable is a massive part of the experience. FC 27 adds new features, including the FUT Gallery, which gives players more ways to collect and display their Player Items.

Whether you love building a team around your favourite club or trying to put together a squad full of the best players in the world, there’s still plenty to get stuck into. The downside is that Ultimate Team can be frustrating when you come up against teams packed with amazing players, especially when you’re still trying to improve your own squad. It can also be tempting to spend too much time chasing new cards. Personally, I think the best part is finding players you enjoy using and building a team that suits your style. Compared with FC 26, there are some interesting additions, although the overall Ultimate Team experience will feel familiar to regular players.

FC 27 vs FC 26: Which is better?

Here’s how I would compare them:

Feature FC 26 FC 27
Gameplay Fun and competitive More engaging, with improvements
Defending Familiar and accessible Rewards positioning and timing
Career Mode Enjoyable, with room to improve Better transfer and development features
Ultimate Team Plenty to keep you playing New features and more to collect
Social football Clubs and existing modes The Grounds adds more variety
Graphics Already impressive Polished, but not a massive change
Overall A strong football game A more complete experience

For me, FC 27 feels like EA has taken what worked in FC 26 and tried to improve it rather than completely changing everything.  That’s a good thing. You still get the football experience you enjoy, but there are new features and improvements that make it worth spending time with.

Final verdict: Is FC 27 worth it?

For me, FC 27 is an enjoyable step forward from FC 26. It keeps the familiar football experience while introducing meaningful changes to Career Mode, new ways to play in The Grounds and extra features for Ultimate Team fans. It isn’t a completely different game, and if you only play occasionally, FC 26 may still be enough. But if you play regularly and enjoy building teams, competing with friends and exploring new modes, FC 27 is well worth considering. Just be prepared for ‘one more game’ to turn into another hour!

Note: Massive thanks to EA for letting us have this game so early, the lads all think my mum is supercool as a result!
