Planning a family trip to Lapland is pure magic, but if there’s one thing every mum knows, it’s that keeping everyone fed, happy, and warm in sub-zero temperatures can be a bit of a balancing act! If you’re currently working through your Lapland packing list or fine-tuning your daily itinerary alongside our ultimate Lapland family travel guide, getting the food right is just as important as booking the husky sledding! You need spots where tired, snow-dusted kids can warm up with crowd-pleasers, alongside options for when you want a truly special dining experience. Whether you’re heading off for the 2026/2027 season, here are the absolute must-visit food spots in Rovaniemi—from iconic local haunts to exciting new additions.
1. Restaurant Roavvi at Aurora Hill Resort (Luxury)
If you’re looking for an upscale dinner that still feels completely relaxed and welcoming for families, Restaurant Roavvi at the brand-new Aurora Hill Resort is the standout new opening for late 2026.
-
The Vibe: High-end Arctic dining surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass panelling set against quiet, snowy pine forests.
-
The Food: Led by Chef Gordon Yam and Culinary Advisor Toni Kostian, the menu focuses on artfully presented local game, wild berries, and fresh river fish.
-
Mamma Tip: Book an early dinner slot around 5:00 PM. You get to enjoy the gorgeous timber-and-glass design with the kids, and if you’re lucky, you might spot the Northern Lights dancing overhead while you eat! We stayed at Aurora Hill Resort last year and it was amazing. The location is close to Rovaniemi yet feels so unspoilt.
2. Leima Kitchen & Bar at Postmaster Hotel (Best Lunch Buffet)
Located inside the historic Postmaster Hotel (formerly Grand Post Hotel) right near the railway station, Leima Kitchen & Bar is one of Rovaniemi’s absolute best hidden gems for families.

The Vibe: Warm, historic, and incredibly welcoming with cozy seating that lets you unwind after a morning of exploring.
-
The Food: While their bistro menu serves up incredible Nordic comfort food, their daily buffet lunch is the real star. Packed with hot homemade dishes, fresh salads, breads, and child-friendly options, it offers fantastic quality and variety at a brilliant price point. Buffet and teens will always be a win for me!
-
Mamma Tip: If you’re arriving by train or heading out on an afternoon excursion, stopping here for lunch is an absolute lifesaver to fill hungry tummies quickly. (Planning a stay here? Read our full Postmaster Hotel family stay review to see why we loved staying in this historic building!).
3. Restaurant Stella Nova at Nova Skyland Hotel (New for 2026/2027)
Right on the edge of Santa Claus Village, Nova Skyland Hotel has launched its stunning new dining venue, Restaurant Stella Nova.
-
The Vibe: Modern Lappish design with warm wooden accents and local artwork—cozy, stylish, and super convenient if you’re spending the day exploring the village.
-
The Food: An incredible breakfast buffet packed with Scandinavian treats (perfect for fueling up before a big day out) and an à la carte dinner featuring fresh local ingredients cooked with modern flair.
-
Mamma Tip: Their breakfast spread includes everything from traditional Karelian pies and cured salmon to warm pancakes with Nutella—a guaranteed hit for picky eaters before heading out on your excursions! A visit to the Nova Skyland has become a bit of a family tradition for us. We love the lunch here after a day of exploring.
4. Santa’s Salmon Place (The Authentic Classic)
You simply cannot visit Santa Claus Village without stopping at Santa’s Salmon Place. Housed in a traditional wooden kota (Lappish teepee), this is as atmospheric as it gets.
-
The Food: They keep it beautifully simple: fresh salmon cooked over an open fire right in the center of the hut, served with warm bread and potato salad. For dessert, try the warm Lappish squeaky cheese with cloudberry jam.
-
The Vibe: Rustic, smoky, and deeply cozy.
-
Mamma Tip: They don’t take reservations, so line up slightly before peak lunch hours to beat the chill and land a spot around the fire! Trust me when I say it is 100% worth it.
5. Musher’s Tavern at Husky Park (Post-Safari Fuel)
Located right inside Husky Park in Santa Claus Village, Musher’s Tavern is the perfect pitstop after an icy adventure with the dogs.
-
The Food: During the day, it’s a cozy cafe serving hot reindeer burgers, bowls of warming salmon soup, and their famous DIY Husky Pancakes where kids can load up their own toppings with whipped cream and sprinkles. In the evening, it transitions into an intimate Arctic dining experience.
-
Mamma Tip: If the kids are overtired after your husky ride, this spot offers fantastic gluten-free and vegan options without any fuss.
6. Kotatieva Winter Leisure Park & Restaurant (Forest Dining)
Tucked away in the woods about 15 minutes outside the city, Kotatieva Resort offers a unique combination of outdoor ice-skating through the trees and a beautiful log restaurant.

-
The Food: Hearty homemade soups, pizzas, and burgers for lunch, turning into traditional slow-cooked Lappish stews for dinner.
-
Mamma Tip: Combine your meal with an afternoon on their ice-skating forest trail to burn off some extra energy before winding down over hot chocolate.
7. Rosso Rovaniemi (The Safe Bet for Fussy Eaters)
When you’ve had a long day in the snow and just need an easy, crowd-pleasing dinner that every child will love without complaint, head straight into central Rovaniemi to Rosso Rovaniemi.

Mamma’s Lapland Dining Survival Checklist
-
Book Ahead for Peak Season: November through January gets packed. Reserve your dinner spots at places like Kotatieva and Roavvi weeks before you fly out.
-
Layering at the Table: Finnish indoor spaces are very well-heated! Opt for easy zip-up layers on the kids so they don’t get overheated the minute you walk inside from the snow.
-
Timing is Everything: Between jet lag, sub-zero temperatures, and outdoor activities, kids tire out earlier than usual. Aim for 5:00 PM or 5:30 PM reservations to avoid mid-meal meltdowns!
