Top Tips for Picking a Wedding Dress for a Winter Wedding

Winter weddings are enchanting, with their cozy atmosphere and stunning snowy backdrops. However, choosing the perfect wedding dress for a winter celebration requires some extra considerations to ensure you stay warm and look breathtaking. Living in Western Europe where the climate is on the colder, temperate side we tend to try to plan wedding for the summer months and hope for sunshine. However it doesn’t have to be like this often venues and suppliers offer discounted rates for weddings in what would be deemed as off peak times. If you do decided to go for a winter wedding we have compiled some top tips on picking a dress making the most of the season and likely weather for that time of year.

1. Embrace Seasonal Fabrics

Winter weddings call for richer, heavier fabrics that provide warmth and comfort. Opt for materials such as:

  • Velvet: Luxurious and warm, perfect for adding a touch of elegance.
  • Satin: Smooth and glossy, offering a timeless and sophisticated look.
  • Mikado: A blend of silk and nylon, known for its structure and warmth.
  • Taffeta: Crisp and slightly textured, ideal for voluminous skirts.

These fabrics not only keep you cozy but also add a luxurious feel to the dress.

2. Consider Long Sleeves

Long-sleeved wedding dresses are a beautiful and practical choice for winter weddings. They add an element of sophistication and provide extra warmth. Options include:

  • Illusion Sleeves: Made from sheer fabric, often adorned with lace or beadwork, offering a delicate and romantic look.
  • Lace Sleeves: Provide a vintage and timeless appeal.
  • Solid Fabric Sleeves: For a more modern and minimalist look.

Long sleeves can be tailored to match any wedding dress style, from bohemian to classic ball gowns. I had a spring wedding myself and my own main dress requirement was to incorporate some sleeve.  Even to this day I adore looking back at my wedding pictures seeing my dress.

3. Add Layers

Layering is key to staying warm without compromising style. Consider these options:

  • Capes and Capelets: These can add a dramatic flair and can be removed for indoor celebrations.
  • Shrugs and Boleros: Perfect for covering your shoulders and arms while adding a touch of elegance.
  • Faux Fur Wraps: Add a luxurious and cozy element, ideal for outdoor photos.

These layers can be easily incorporated into your bridal look and removed when indoors or during dancing. It makes the transition from the colder outdoor much easier.

4. Choose the Right Accessories

Winter weddings offer unique opportunities for accessories that complement the season:

  • Gloves: Long, elegant gloves can keep your hands warm and add a vintage charm.
  • Scarves and Shawls: These can be both practical and stylish, especially for outdoor ceremonies or photos.
  • Winter Boots: Consider a pair of stylish white or silver boots for outdoor photos to keep your feet warm and dry.

Make sure your accessories align with your overall wedding theme and dress style. I am an accessories girl and you can really add to an outfit with the right accessories, just dont overdue it! There can be a fine line between classy and over done.

5. Pay Attention to Necklines

Higher necklines can provide extra warmth and a sophisticated look. Options include:

  • Bateau Neckline: Elegant and modest, extending to the shoulder line.
  • High Neckline: Adds a vintage or royal feel, especially when combined with lace or beadwork.
  • Off-the-Shoulder with Sleeves: Balances coverage and style, providing warmth while showcasing your shoulders.

Choosing the right neckline can enhance your comfort and style in colder weather. I have long been a fan of the elegance of the high neckline and a winter wedding is the perfect time to incorporate one into your dress choice.
