3 Phases of Decluttering: Make Your Home Shine Like Never Before

Do you have too much stuff and not enough places to put it all in? Don’t worry. It’s a problem many people have. Whether that’s the exact nature of your problem or that your stuff just isn’t in the right place, there is a solution. Better yet, it only takes three phases to solve.

The best news about this is that the first phase of decluttering is all in your mind. Just plan to tackle your clutter problem and get organized. Why? Phase 1

Clearing your home of clutter involves making a decision about everything you own: either get rid of it or give it a place. With this idea in mind, go from room to room, clearing out shelves, closets, and drawers. As you clear things, ask yourself these questions about each object:

  •         When was the last time you used this? Decide on a time frame that is acceptable to you.
  •         How often is this item used?

  •         Where is this used?
  •         How many of these do you have?
  •         Can it still be used? If so, will it be used again?
  •         What impact, if any, would it have if it was gotten rid of?
  •         Could someone else use it more than it is being used now?

Phase 2

As you sort through these items, keep four piles (or boxes/bins, etc.) one for each of these:

Trash: Throw away anything that is broken, or you are confident that you will never finish such as a model or crafts project.

Give Away/Donate/Recycle: Make sure that anything you want to give away or donate meets that fate. Otherwise, all you have accomplished is to create another pile.

Save and Put Away: Anything you plan to keep, put it in a place of its own.

To Be Determined: Almost anytime you sort through clutter, you will nearly always come across things that have sentimental value or are otherwise hard to part with. Items such as these will probably require two or more trips through the clutter evaluation process. This is fine, but don’t allow this pile to become the biggest pile. Otherwise, you have solved nothing.

Phase 3

After you have conquered your clutter problem, there is always a tendency to get behind again. This issue can be fixed by staying on top of how you decide to treat your current possessions. For example, if you decide to always keep your jacket and keys on a coat rack besides the door, make sure it is always kept there.

Periodically make a review of things as they appear in your living space. If, for example, something you kept is no longer needed, put It in a box or pail to donate or give it away the next time.

Clutter occurs when and where you least expect it. To prevent it from getting out of hand, make sure to “declutter” whenever things begin to rear their ugly heads. It might even be a good idea to make a periodic note to schedule “declutter” time. This approach will not only keep you better organized, but will also serve as a warning before purchasing that next new piece of future clutter.
