How long does it take to move house in the UK?

For most of us, moving house is a very exciting time, albeit a stressful one. Whether you’re upping sticks and relocating to a totally different part of the country, or simply moving to a bigger and better house just a few streets away, the actual moving process can be exhausting both physically and mentally.

So how long does it actually take? That depends on a lot of things – namely how many people there are in your household, how much stuff you collectively own and where you’re moving it to.

There are, however, ways to make the whole process easier and faster, which we’ll outline here.

How you can make the moving process less stressful

Very much like packing for a holiday, you don’t want to leave it till the last minute before you start packing your belongings away. Even if you think you don’t have that many possessions, you’ll think otherwise when you’re working against the clock.

It’s best to start packing things away bit by bit in the lead-up to the big day.

Supplies for head-start packing

First, get yourself stocked up on the following:

  • Strong cardboard boxes designed specifically for removals
  • Bubblewrap
  • Parcel tape (maybe even some ‘FRAGILE’ tape)
  • Good household scissors
boxes

Pic Credit: Pixabay

You can find all of these things at places like Wilko, stationery shops and, of course, Amazon or eBay.

Things to pack in advance

Then, once you’re equipped, start spending 30-60 minutes each day (depending on how much stuff you have) wrapping and packing items that you won’t need to use until you’ve moved into the new place. Think the following:

  • Excess plates, bowls, cutlery, mugs, drinking-glasses, etc.
  • Books, DVDs, CDs and other media
  • Clothes and footwear (especially things that don’t apply to the current weather/season!)

Furniture and other essential items (like entertainment devices and kitchen appliances) can and should wait until moving day – otherwise you’ll be living a pretty spartan existence for the last few days or weeks in your old house.

How you can speed the home-moving process up

The journey from your old house to your new house will unfortunately take as long as it takes – there’s no way to safely speed that up.

Work methodically if your DIY’ing it

Many people who are moving locally choose to rent a van and make a few trips. You can hire a regular Transit-type van or opt for a ‘Luton’ van – the latter being the largest type that you can rent with a regular UK driver’s licence. In any case, you’ll need to be strategic about the order in which you do things, because you’ll probably have to make more than one trip.

It might be wise to dedicate the first journey to moving just your furniture and other large items (such as fridges, washing machines, etc.), so that you can put them roughly in place before you bring over all your other bits and bobs. If you are lucky enough to fit everything in the van in one go, make sure your furniture goes in last.

Hire professional movers

By far the easiest and least stressful way to move is by paying pros to come and do it for you. Not only do they do all of the heavy lifting and all of the maneuvering around tight spaces, but they also have the expertise to pack your belongings securely and safely.

Twilley Removals is a professional removals company in London, with more than 100 years of proud history, and a certified member of the British Association of Removers (BAR). So, if you’re going to hire a moving firm, make sure you go with a reputable option.

Tips for making your garden a safe and fun environment for kids

We have been renovating our house over the last number of years and while the inside is nearing completion, an equally challenging task is next on the agenda……the outside spaces.  Neither of us are green fingered and the thought of tackling the overgrown mess outside fills me with such dread.  We definitely need some expert intervention on this one even for some consultancy. One key proviso for me a safe and fun environment for the kids. I decided what better to do than to reach other so my fellow blogger to see what they have done with their gardens.

Garden Safety

Garden Safety - locking shed

Garden Safety

First up some great tips around keeping the area itself safe and enclosed.  Elizabeth from The Homemakers Journal had some great suggestions in terms of basic safety, keeping the tools and equipment in separate storage areas.  Also crucially and a very important consideration, keep all sprays and fertilisers out of reach of little hands (and animals).  Jo from Cup of Toast also highlighted the importance of keeping hazards out the way, I love her suggestion of giving the kids their own shed that way they are contained and away from potential hazards or even escaping!

Pete who writes at Household Money Saving highlighted the importance of making sure the toys themselves are in good working condition.  This is a brilliant suggestion and probably one im guilty of not doing enough off particularly for the likes of trampolines and swings which could pose a risk if not installed or used correctly.

I love Natalie from Mummy and Moose suggestion of training the dog to do its business in one area and training the kids to avoid! Genius!! While we don’t have any pets one suggestion that ill definitely be implementing is from Sarah of A Few Favourite Things of keeping the wheelie bins separate. Safety aside we have 3 and they are so unsightly looking!

I also love Carolin of Mummy Alarm suggestion of  soft surfaces for playing on.  I have two boys and they just love playing rough, climbing and skipping around the place.  Hopefully a soft surface would lessen the cuts and scraps.  Having done my research (extensive research!) I have found ESP Play who amongst other products offer a great range of soft surfaces. I really like the artifical grass or the rubber mulch. I’m all about low maintenance but practical solutions.

Garden Fun

The bit the boys will love!! Both Stacey of One Small Human and Anoushka of Spitting Yarn mentioned mud kitchens!! I have never heard of this before but I suspect the boys would love it, quite literally, a sectioned off area with some kitchen utensils and some muck/mud. You can’t beat the messy play to keep them entertained for hours.  Emma from Our Fairytale Adventure suggested a sensory garden including a fruit and veg patch. I love the idea of growing some of our own vegetable so this is something im definitely looking into. Check out Emma’s gorgeous garden at the above lunch, that pergola is some serious garden goals!

Play equipment

climbing frames

Pic Credit: espplay.co.uk

The boys really want a tree house or some kind of play equipment and the Dada Fairy has promised them that he would get them something when the garden is done! I always end up doing so much research im a total planner and need to know everything! But have a look a the tangled equipment from ESP Play .  Absolutely love the look of them and I know my kids would love them too and no doubt proving hours of fun out in the garden.  I do note it would need one of the above mentioned soft surfaces due to the inevitable fall risk but I really do love them and combined with the soft surface above I think it would be a fantastic investment in our garden.  One of the things im lusting after myself is a hammock from Hammock Giant.

How amazing would it be to be chilling with a book on one of the fab hommocks on a stand. So fab.

One of the most interesting things I did come across while looking for children’s play equipment was the study on the aforementioned ESP Play site which showed as a result of extensive independent research commissioned by ESP and carried out by Liverpool John Moores University, they discovered that the average amount of physical activity taking place during PE lessons was remarkably low. This really shocked me and to my mind while the tangled equipment looks good it is doing far more than just that, it is actively encouraging physical activity. A really huge benefit in my mind.

Lots of  fantastic tips and inspiration above, however one thing I do know for sure is that ill definitely be enlisting the services of a gardener when its all done to keep on top of the routine maintenance. Left to myself and the Dada Fairy we wouldn’t have a clue where to start!!

Ill look forward to revealing the finished product over the next few months.

Tips for choosing the best high waist shaper for women

Many of us struggle with stubborn flabby belly and exercising sometimes do not help. No matter how slim a woman is, the tummy would always have a bit of roll. Hands up if you would like to slim and control the tummy bulges. What you need is high waist shapewear. This amazing shaping garment is rising in popularity because of its ability to offer a sleek firm look. High waist shapewear can effectively flatten the tummy and waist area instantly. If you want to look nicer in your favorite dress for that special date night and want to get rid of the love handles, high waist shapewear can do just that. The right undergarment will trim and tuck in all the right places so that you will feel good about yourself and step out with confidence.

Shapewear is an awesome invention but it can be overwhelming to choose what is best especially when faced with so many options today. How do we know what is the best plus size waist trainer?  How do we decide which will work best for our bodies?

How To Choose The Best High Waist Shaper

Below is a guide on how to choose the best high waist shapewear for women.

Which area are you trying to enhance or correct?

The first thing is to determine which part of your body you would like to hide or enhance. If you are searching for shapewear that can shape the entire torso then a bodysuit is ideal. There are bodysuits that feature an open bust that will actually lift your breasts and you will have to wear your own bra. A bodysuit that covers the chest will be able to minimize a larger chest. For shapewear that eliminates panty lines, slims the tummy, hips and rear, a pair of shaping panty is what you need.  If you would like to have slimmer thighs, go for a boyshort shapewear.

Where Are You Wearing The Shapewear To?

You have to first determine if you are wearing the shapewear on a daily basis, on special occasions or for your gym workout. For waist training workouts, then you may want to check out the best waist trainer for women. It is ideal for those who want an hourglass figure. There are also high-waisted shapewaer leggings that you can actually work out in. If you want something for everyday use, then you can look for a seamless shaping bodysuit, mid-thigh body shaper or panty shaper.

What Are You Wearing The Body Shaper With?

Another factor to take into consideration is what are you wearing the shapewear with.  Are you looking for one that can be worn under a dress? If you are worried about visible panty lines when wearing body-hugging dress, a better choice would be thong shapewear bodysuits.

Best High Waisted Shapewear for 2022

Some of the popular shapewear in the market today are full body shaper, butt lifter, waist trainers or waist cinchers, and more. Ahead are some of the best high waist shapewear that you may want to add to your wardrobe.

The push up bra design offers added support when you wear your own bra. Made high quality soft and sweat wicking material, this high waist panty shaper is breathable and comfortable to wear all day. It features 3 clasps that can be hooked onto the bra to prevent the panty from rolling down. Are you ever #driventodistraction

people carrier

Our recent Iceland road trip Pic Credit: The Mamma Fairy Blog

We love to travel and that’s both locally and overseas and often favouring ferry travel so w can take our own car when we can. On a recent road trip we were trying to guestimate our yearly road miles! Anecdotally it is believed this figure to be around 10,000 a year for us id say multiply that by at least 5 or 6. One thing I will say and I’m very proud to say is how safety conscious my husband is. It is a lot of responsibility for him opting to be the driver the vast majority of the time. I’m not ashamed to say he is the better driver.

Recently I happened upon a game by Kwik-fit which I thought was really interesting. Entitled #driventodistraction it gives you the chance to test your reaction times by answering the questions on the phone whilst concentrating on the road and looking out for the STOP sign and it records how long it takes for you to stop! Sounds easy?? I urge anybody who is on the road to give this a go, you will honestly be so surprised.

As part of their research Kwik fit found that 19% of the surveyed drivers admitted that they sometimes take calls while driving, 17% admit that they read texts off of their phone, and 12% send texts. Aside from the obvious breaking the rules of the road, clearly any of the below can serious diminish your reaction times and even worse still be the time needed to react in an emergency situation.

GPS/ Sat Nav on phones

phone on car dash

Pic Credit: Pixabay

Many of us are guilty of using the sat navs/ GPS on our phones to help us find the location we need however using your phone to type into the map function is no different to txting etc – you still are utilising the phone and the possibility of being #driventodistraction is still there irrespective of how you are using your phone. If you need to use your sat nav feature/ gps on your phone – delegate!

Life is precious and we all owe a duty of care to our own passengers and other road users. There is no txt no call worth it. Pull over when safe or wait until you get there.

As an aside do have a nosey on the Kwik fit webpage for some further information on other safety matter like tyre wear and tear and brakes.

Let’s face it… as parents we all worry constantly about our children, especially when we are on holiday in an unfamiliar place that we know nothing about. Is the place safe for them, will they find things to do, find friends to play with? And will us parents manage to find even a few minutes to chill out & relax?

I wonder, could there be a holiday setting that offers our children a safe environment, one that allows them to be creative, to eat healthily and at the same time allows us parents to have some precious moments of worry-free enjoyment? If it does exist, it must be a truly magical place…

In fact, this wonderful place really does exist and its name is the Rithymna Beach Hotel, part of the well-known Aquila Hotels & Resorts in Crete.

There is even a specialist doctor’s office for your complete peace of mind.

The children are in a completely safe environment, where they’ll make unforgettable memories with creative activities such as theatre, music, dance and painting. The child-friendly Tasty Corner offers the children healthy treats & snacks all day long.

Best of all, the package is a free service for guests and is offered throughout the season.

Why Beanbags are Redefining Comfort in 2019

If you are looking for a new way to revitalize your living room, then you need to think about getting yourself a beanbag. These products are defining comfort as they allow you to sit on them for hours without feeling tired or pain. If you are looking for reasons to get yourself a beanbag, then here are ways these products are redefining comfort this year.

Versatility

The versatility aspect of the beanbag is one element that helps to redefine its comfort. The beanbag chair allows you to relax on the outdoors, whether it’s in the pool or by the side of it. In any case, beanbag function much better compared to the traditional floating loungers and are even more comfortable as opposed to the mesh loungers.

As mentioned, these items come in a variety of sizes and the small ones can be stored pretty much anywhere including the attic and closet. For extra seating, these can be thrown around the living room to create additional room for your guests. Apart from that, you can place a small board across your medium-size beanbag for conversion to a coffee table. Other smaller beanbags can be turned into additional chairs for the guests to use along with your converted coffee table.

Large chairs of this design make the perfect chill out / watching a movie seats. What’s more, you don’t have to arrange the beanbag chairs in monotonous straight rows. You can move them around or shift their positions to get a setting that is most ideal for you.

Lastly, there are various ways you can adjust the beanbags so they can comfort with your sitting style. Even so, these products don’t limit you to just sitting. For the desired comfort, you can lie on your stomach or side, sit up, or even lean back. Therefore, the versatility aspect of the beanbags allows you to get cozy and comfortable.

Squishy Interior

Another aspect that adds to the comfort of the beanbags is their squishy interior. As mentioned earlier, their interior is composed of soft materials that allow for the beanbags to mold themselves to the body of the person sitting on them. For that reason, the beanbags are incredible comfort for sleeping and sitting. There are different ways you can sit on the beanbags and this is all made possible by their squishy interior. For pregnant women, the beanbag is not just any ordinary product but one that allows them to sit and sleep comfortably given the fact that the bags can accommodate their bumps and make it possible to even lie on their stomach. It is for this reason that beanbags have been highly ranked when it comes to ensuring comfort for pregnant women.

No Joint or Muscle Pain

Are you suffering from any kind of joint or muscle pain? Seating regularly is one of the causes of discomfort as it causes pain in joints and muscles. A lounge chair may look like the right solution, but this does not always provide comfort to a person’s body. With a beanbag, however, you do not need to worry about these pains and discomfort. Beanbags are made from different materials and the shredded memory foam is one of them. A bean bag chair that has been filled with memory foam that has been shredded comforts to your body, thus offering postural support.

The level of relaxation that is derived from using the beanbag chair also helps in alleviating shoulder and neck tension. With a beanbag chair, you are in a position to get a constant level of support which goes a long way in reducing pain. When you are relaxed, the possibilities of suffering from tension headaches are usually low.

In addition to that, beanbags are suitable for sitting on if you always spend a large proportion of your time behind the computer. What’s more, these items come in various sizes and shapes, so you are less likely to miss one that meets your needs.  Today, it is a requirement for offices to provide ergonomic furniture. Large beanbag chairs can be the ideal solution for meeting these kinds of demand. A large chair of this kind will offer postural support to eliminate your shoulder, back, and neck pains.

Since there are numerous options, it would be advantageous to make Lovesac comparisons so you can be certain you are choosing a product that best fits your needs.

Employee Comfort

The good thing about beanbags is that they can also be used in offices. Part of the reasons why beanbags are popular this year lies in the fact that they can be used to motivate employees to do better due to their comfort aspect. When employees feel comfortable at work, they are in a position to work productively and collaborate with others. Moreover, ensuring your employees are comfortable all the time allows them to feel relaxed and perform better at work. On the other hand, when employees are not comfortable, they could easily lose focus. Due to their structure and design, beanbags offer a level of comfort which they may not have expected to get while at work.

With beanbags, office workers can sit wherever they want and productively could occur spontaneously anywhere employees feel comfortable. Their comfort may inspire their creativity. That is because employees who feel comfortable in their spaces are usually free to express themselves. On the other hand, employees who are not comfortable may offer ideas and feedback which are not helpful to the organization.

The lightweight aspect of beanbags allows for adjustments and employees can move them around in case they need space that would allow them to concentrate on their work. If they need to hold a group meeting, beanbags allow for such to happen since they are flexible and portable.

Final Words

It is without a doubt that beanbags play a crucial role in ensuring the comfort of users. Their materials and design make it possible for these items to be adjusted in accordance with the preferences of the users. That way, beanbags can diminish body pain, ensure comfort, and promote productivity.

Protecting Your Home: 4 Common Problems to Take Measures Against

The home is a place of peace, love and safety for all of us, shielding us and our children from everything that lies outside those beautiful walls, which you have spent a good deal of money and time decorating. Unfortunately, if you are not careful about protecting your home from some common problems that often creep up undetected, you are compromising your safe haven. Read on as we discuss a few common problems with most homes, and the measures you can take against them.

Plumbing Issues

plug

Pic Credit: Pixabay

Plumbing is a serious issue everywhere, but in regions of the country where it can get pretty cold, the pipes needs proper insulation as they can easily freeze over and crack.

Aside from that, there’s always the running toilet every now and then, leaking pipes and taps, etc. The key is to call in the plumber before the problem becomes serious, as most people ignore the groaning pipes until something bursts and the entire bathroom is flooded.

Damp and Mould

Most of the country suffers from damp, cold winters, so water damage and mould are not uncommon problems either. Infants, children and seniors are the most at risk if there is indeed water damage and consequent mould formation. As mould can go unchecked and even cause death in very rare cases, get it checked out if you notice water damage on your walls or the ceiling and suspect fungal infestations.

Boiler Breakdowns

Is there anything more terrifying than the idea of waking up shivering on a cold and freezing February night, only to find that the boiler is out of commission? Well, there probably are a few scenarios scarier than that, but it has to be one of the top five nonetheless!

As the freezing temperatures can make things very uncomfortable very fast, especially when you have children at home, consider signing up for boiler cover from a company like Certi and you won’t ever have to worry about boiler maintenance or breakdowns, even in the middle of a cold, winter night. In fact, Certi has a whole range of Home Plans and the top tier plan offers services across most of the major home safety problems that we are discussing here.

Electrical Problems

light bulb

Pic Credit: Pixabay

A good lot of us might be able to change a bulb or replace a fuse, but when the power shuts down and you can’t find anything wrong with the fuse, things are starting to look more serious.

Without power, almost everything from home security systems, to your boiler will be out for the count, but please do not attempt to try and solve the problem yourself, unless you are a professional electrician.

This is one of the major emergencies, which you can’t do much to prevent it, but what you can do is sign up with a home protection service that will send an electrician to your home at any hour of the day or night.

Being a homeowner always comes with a set of added responsibilities, and when you are a first time home owner, those responsibilities can overwhelm you quite easily in the beginning. Hopefully now you will at least be able to avoid the more serious issues and potential hazards that we discussed here.

Single Parent days out deals or not!

Having a family travel blog we get lots of queries via email, DM and across social media on our adventures and days out. I am very much a bargain shopper when it comes to travel and days out making use of sites like Groupon to get the best value

PayPlan

One cohort of emails that I often received when I do post a deal or good offer or blog about the activity always  strikes a chord with me.  That is the disparity of prices in the deals that I share for “family” 2 +2 offers and families which comprise of a single parent. PayPlan who are a free debt advice provider have produced a very useful infographic which looks at the true cost of activities for single parent families. Ill be very honest its not something that I had ever considered before but know it really is something I will be very aware of when sharing deals.

Infographic

PayPlan

PayPlan have produced an infographic which shows the results of their own research into the cost of family activities comparing 2 parent plus 2 children deal when compared with the cost of two parents plus two children. The infographic is reproduced below with kind permission and the results will shock you. The family train ticket cost difference I found staggering.

Other statistics they found include; which I really I really didn’t know was that 1 in 4 families class themselves as “single parent” and a statistic which I find really upsetting is that – a third of children with a single working parent family live in poverty. I find that so sad.

The research found that most single parent families were headed by a single mother and that one in ten have used payday loans or foodbanks to get by.

There is a useful hashtag #CostOfSingleParentLiving where you share your experiences and read about other peoples.

The results of their research found that being a single parent will cost you more in every instance. I had to read that a second time to really process it. So shocking.

Unfortunately I don’t have the magic solution to how this could be rectified and while I doesn’t impact me directly I feel its important to raise awareness of this issue.

Attic Restoration: The 4-Step Raccoon Removal System

Critters getting into the attic is more than just an annoyance. When there are signs that raccoons may be getting into the home, it’s important to have them removed as fast as possible and to repair the damage done. For raccoon removal, there is a basic four step process that should be followed to remove the raccoons, prevent them from getting into the home again, and to restore the attic so there are no further signs of damage or potential issues in the future.  It is really important to consult experts in this area to assist or carry out this work. A simple search using your preferred search engine including your location for example “raccoon removal in Texas” should yield sufficient results to enable you to start your research on engaging a professional in your local area.

Figure Out How Many Raccoons are There

How many raccoons are there in the attic? Even if it only sounds like there’s one or you’ve only seen one, it’s possible there could be more. A professional can take a look inside the attic to determine how many raccoons may be in there. It’s possible a female raccoon got into the home to find a warm, secure location for a nest, so there may be a lot more raccoons than you would expect. Take the time to find more details about how to determine the number of raccoons in the attic now.

Remove All Raccoons From the Attic

Pic Credit: Pixabay

Once a professional knows how many raccoons are in the attic and whether there are any babies, the next step is to trap and remove the raccoons. It may be possible for a professional to relocate the whole family, giving them a new place to live that isn’t your home. A trap will be set up in the attic and checked regularly to determine when all of the raccoons have been trapped. There are many different types of bait that can be used to trap raccoons, so this step shouldn’t take long. Babies may need to be trapped by the professional, as they’re not likely to leave the nest like the parent.

Close Up Any Entry Points to the Home’s Attic

There has to be a way for the raccoons to get into the attic. Unfortunately, raccoons are good at finding a variety of ways to get inside a home. It’s important to find and block all potential entry points, or the raccoons are simply going to move back into the home. Homeowners will want to work with a professional to find every potential entry point and make sure it is closed properly to prevent the raccoons from coming back and creating a new nest.

Treat and Restore the Attic

After the raccoons are completely removed and cannot get back into the attic, it’s time to start the restoration process. This includes removing insulation and other materials that have been soiled by the raccoon, disinfecting hard surfaces the raccoon may have come in contact with, and replacing anything that does need to be removed, like the insulation. It is imperative this step is done properly, as the waste left behind by raccoons can carry serious diseases. It is a good idea to have a professional handle the job to make sure it’s done fully and to reduce the risk of becoming sick.

Raccoons can get into attics easily and, when they do, can cause a significant amount of damage in a short period of time. Most of the time, they’re looking for a place to create a nest that is warm and secure, and an attic provides that for them. If you do ever think there could be raccoons in your attic, call a professional and let them handle the four step process to remove the raccoons from your home.
