Top tips for moving country with kids

Have you ever gone on holidays and thought to yourself… I could really see myself living here.  But then what’s actually stopping you? Its too much hassle? Not knowing where to start? Do you find the the idea of moving country with kids overwhelming?

Moving to a new country is a major life event, there is no doubt about that and when children are involved, the process can feel even more overwhelming. From securing visas to ensuring a smooth transition for your family, there are many factors to consider. Given that this is an idea we have been floating around for some time, I thought id chat to five of our close friends who have either moved to another country from here or  families who have moved over here from their home country. What I wanted to do was get a broad range of diverse tips and advice to help any families who are thinking of doing this from families who have made the move. Real life experience…its the best kind.  So… from those who have actually made the move, I  have collated the top five tips to make your international move with kids as stress-free as possible.

1. Use the Services of Visa and Immigration Experts One of the most challenging aspects of moving abroad is navigating visa and immigration requirements. In fact all of those I spoke too said this and almost everybody mentioned it first.  Every country has different regulations, paperwork, and timelines. To avoid delays or costly mistakes, consider using the services of a reputable visa company or immigration consultant for example if it was a move to Germany you were interested in making, Settle in Germany would be one such company that can assist you in this regard.   They can guide you through the legal requirements, help with applications, and ensure all necessary documentation is in place for your entire family.

2. Consult Experts on Housing, Education, and Healthcare Once you’ve sorted out your visas, the next priority is securing housing, schooling, and healthcare for your children. Research the best neighborhoods for families, taking into account factors such as safety, proximity to schools, and access to medical facilities. Consulting local real estate agents, school admission officers, and healthcare providers can help you make informed decisions and ease your transition into a new environment. One family who moved to the Middle East suggested that finding the school and working backwards was how they did it that for them securing a reputable English school was so important, more so for them than the accommodation.

3. Involve Your Kids in the Moving Process Moving can be an emotional experience for children, so involving them in the process can make them feel more comfortable. Talk to them about the move well in advance, answer their questions, and encourage them to research their new home. If possible, take them on a pre-move visit to explore the area and visit potential schools. Letting them help pack their belongings or choose decorations for their new room can also give them a sense of control over the change. I personally think this is crucial and not just for a move but for a lot of the daunting things that happen for kids. For us as a family tackling things together and involving the kids reaps huge rewards.

4. Plan for Cultural and Language Adjustments Adapting to a new culture and, in some cases, a new language can be one of the biggest challenges for children. Enrolling them in language classes before the move can give them a head start. Encourage cultural immersion by introducing them to books, movies, and food from the new country. If possible, connect with other expat families or local communities to help them make new friends and ease the transition. Most areas have groups on social media where expats arrange meets or share tips and advice. A quick search across your preferred platform will almost certainly yield many options for groups to join where experiences are shared.

5. Maintain a Sense of Routine and Familiarity Moving to a new country brings a lot of change, but maintaining some sense of familiarity can help children adjust more easily. Keep family traditions, bedtime routines, and favourite activities as consistent as possible. Bringing familiar items from home, such as their favourite toys, books, or bedding, can provide comfort in a new environment. While this is important I do think that kids are incredibly adaptable and can often shock us in how easy they find the transition

Final Thoughts Moving country with kids may come with its challenges, but with careful planning and the right support, it can also be an exciting and enriching experience for the entire family. By utilizing expert services, preparing for cultural adjustments, and keeping your children engaged in the process, you can help ensure a smooth transition into your new life abroad.
