Hedbanz Game – Our Review

headbanz game

Pic Credit: Spinmaster

We love board games in the Mamma Fairy house. We have reviewed many different ones in the past. In a world so engrossed in all things techy I love being able to drag my pair away and have some good old fashioned fun.

Hedbanz arrived in perfect time for our road trip to Lough Erne Resort.   Hedbanz is the ideal travel game no batteries needed and you can quite easily adapt it to play it on the road.  You simply have  to guess  ‘What am I?’  based on the card on the headband on your head. Very easy game for 2-6 players and equally as much fun whether you have 2 or 6 players.

I love the sheer simplicity of this game. The fact it forces you to engage your brain and think what exactly you could be either an animal, food or an object. The game comes with s 68 clue cards, 6 question cards, 6 headbands, timer & 24 chips. The suggested age is 7 upward however I can safely say ages 6 to 60+ enjoyed this one.

I think this game is a really great and reasonably priced option for birthday gifts or dare I say the C word. Santa has a tradition of bringing a board game to this house, more specifically one for all the family to enjoy when the turkey and roses are long devoured. If you are thinking of something like this. You wont be disappointed. So much fun  and most importantly can be enjoyed from 6 to 60+ as it was in our house.

Note: We were sent this game to review however all view are mine or the boys where appropriate.

Parenting 101: New Ways to Unwind After A Long Day

Parenting is a job that is around the clock and as a result, can be pretty demanding. Your days usually consist of high-energy kids, tidying up, meal planning, and trying to minimise the chaos. As a result, you may often find that you’re extremely tired on some days and desperately looking for a pause button. The reality that there is no visible pause button as a parent, so you have to create one of your own.  You may be reading this because you’re in dire need of some relaxation and need a few ideas on how to get it. If so, you’re in the right place as you’re going to find three ways that you can unwind after a long day below.

Bubble Bath

When looking for ways to unwind after a long day, one of the first things to consider is a bubble bath. This is a great way to unwind physically as parenting and working can be somewhat draining. In addition to this, a warm and soothing bubble bath can also give you the opportunity to clear your head and arrange your thoughts. There are so many bath products out there and all of them serve different purposes in terms of how they make you feel. Some bath products to consider trying include the Laura Mercier Crème Brulee Honey Bath, Molton Brown Delicious Rhubarb & Rose Bath & Shower Gel, Origins Ginger Bubble Bath, and Floris Rose Geranium Bath Essence. If you drink wine, you could also consider having a glass with accompanying music.

Nature Walk

For all nature loving parents out there, another idea to consider is taking a walk in nature after a long day. The good thing about this is that there are several places locally that you’re likely to find glorious park or woodlands to explore, so you don’t have to go far to do this. You could decide to sit in your garden if you have one, take a walk in the park or walk around your neighborhood.

Try New Hobbies

Finding a new hobby can be exactly what the doctor ordered. You could try meditating, yoga or even gardening. If you enjoy vaping, then you could even head to redjuice.co.uk and view the abundance of flavours which include refreshing apple, tangy citrus or e-liquids that resemble a custard tart. Either try something new, or if you have a hobby you already love, make more time for it.

Relaxing Exercises

Sometimes, the best way to unwind is by engaging yourself in relaxing exercises. There are several types that have the ability to help you relax your body as well as reduce stress levels. For starters, you could try breathing exercises for stress which you can do before exercise or before bed. To do this, make yourself comfortable and let your breath flow deep down into your belly through your nose and then slowly breath out through your mouth. Aside from breathing exercises, you can also try yoga and stretching as they can also be quite relaxing as well.

Parenting is a job that takes you through a whirlwind of emotions. It teaches you how to multitask, manage, and balance, but while learning these things, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and burnt out. However, by taking time out to unwind every day, you should find that you have time to regather yourself and start afresh.

Our loft/attic conversion- some advice

We have discussed our renovation projects at length on the blog.  We are getting there finally.  Last piece of the epic project was the conversion of our attic or loft space. The boys are getting older and  they really wanted a “boys den”. The most logical place to do this was the attic space.  There isnt enough head room to make it a bedroom for adults but there would be plenty room the kids to stand for quite a few more years.

The Stairs

floating stairs

Pic Credit: https://uk.fontanotshop.com

The best piece of advice I can give here is to do you research.  Price and quality really does vary considerably and if like our it is going to be in almost daily use, durability will be critical. Many hour were spent pouring over google, Pintrest and home & interiors magazines. The stairs for us would also be a focal point as they lead on from the current staircase.  I have completely fallen in love with the designs and selections from Fontanot stairs designers.   Within reason I never mind spending money on quality.  These stairs will be in place for sometime to come so as well as being durable they need to be easy on the eye too or else it will drive me crazy every time I look at them!

How utterly amazing are the floating steps staircase.  I mean wow, want want want.  My kids are little too young for us to have these yet but in another couple of years this is the dream.  I love clean lines and that sharp crisp look and they totally tick all the boxes for me.  I have even checked, our wall is load bearing and suitable to accommodate them! Hint hint Dada Fairy!!!

Light – natural and artificial

Pic Credit: Sterling Build

Lighting is important especially for the attic.  I wanted as much natural light as I could without spending a huge amount of money on roof structural alterations. We went with 3 velux windows which bring in tonnes of natural light. They really make this space so workable.  Having shopped around we ended up buying blinds from Sterling Build. We went with three different types of Star Wars blinds  and they worked out so much cheaper than buying direct from Velux. Quality is perfect and they are blackout blinds which make it it ideal if we did decide to use the room as a bedroom for sleep overs etc.  We also added a huge amount of artificial light with integrated spot lights.

I am so thrilled with the outcome its a very usable space.  The kids really do love it and especially enjoy the pals coming over for play dates or movie nights. Has anybody else converted their attic spaces? I’d love to see some pics.

Imaginative Play during the summer holidays thanks to Casdon

School holidays are upon us and each year its the same challenge keeping my pair entertained.  While I do allow screen time it is very much in moderation.  I prefer to let them use their own imaginations through play. I have written about this before – imaginative play is always high on the agenda in The Mamma Fairy house.  We were very fortunate to receive a fabulous bundle of treats from Casdon for my crazy pair to try out.  As I mentioned before my youngest is affectionately knows as Mr Destruction possessing the unique ability to destroy even the best made toys!

We received three products to review:

  • Toy Play Food Set
  • Toy Shopping Trolley
  • Henry Mop and Bucket

First a little bit about the brand. Casdon have been making replicas of real products for over 65 years. You will see names like Hetty and Henry and the renowned Dyson brand.  When you have a look at their website you will want to be a child again. Huge selection of products available.

I’m going to review this in order of preference as determined by kids ages almost 6 and 3.  A First up is….

toy food

Casdon Play Food Set

Toy Play Food Set

I tried to get a picture before they tore the packing apart but had little success.  They were immediately drawn to the food set. There are 44 realistic items in it. They are a great size, realistic details and the size is just perfect for little hands.  I’ve been pretend eating all sorts of strange concoctions since this arrived! They are looking for an oven next. Hopefully some real life skills being learned here too!  This is a great gift idea as I can see how it would provide lots of varied play for kids.

Henry Mop and Bucket

toy shopping trolley

Shopping Trolley and Henry Mop

This is utterly adorable. My youngest in particular loved this one. We have a real Henry in this house so he loved following me around with his mop and bucket. Priced around €8 this is a a great little gift idea. Probably aimed more for the younger of the age bracket. Nonetheless a well made toys with lots of potential

I’m DIY challenged so I delegated the making of this one to the Dada Fairy! He is much better (more patience) than me for these kinds of tasks! It did take him a little bit of time which either means its a bit fiddly or else he was distracted by the world cup! Once assembled again its a sturdy toy which comes with a selection food.  When coupled with the Toy Play Food set above the boys had a huge amount of pretend food in their supermarket.  Again probably aimed at the lower end of the age bracket as they handle isnt very tall.  However both of mine enjoyed this one and I can see lots of play from this one too.

I am a fan of real life simulated play and Casdon not only with the above but across their entire range deliver that in spades.  With the durability, selection and playabilty I will definitly but coming back to Casdon for future products.  Already on my list for my nieces upcoming birthday.

Note: We were sent the above for review, however all opinion are  mine or the boys where appropriate.

Alternative Adventure Activities All the Family Can Enjoy This Summer

If you’re seeking some alternative ways to spend time together as a family this summer, why not aim for a little adventure? Adventure-based activities are great for children’s development, they help you to bond as a family and they keep you and the kids active.

So, what type of alternative adventure activities can you take part in? Below, you’ll discover just some activities you’ll want to consider.

Quad skating

Back before the development of technology, children used to spend hours skating outdoors. While roller blades can be potentially dangerous, quad skates really couldn’t be safer. Why not treat the kids to a new pair of quad skates this summer? You can pick up some pretty cool looking skates these days from stores such as SkateHut.

The great thing about quad skates is that they’re affordable and enjoyable to use. They’re also suitable for most age groups and loved equally by boys and girls. You could even pick up some adult skates and join in. You’ll be surprised how enjoyable skating can be as an adult.

Best Italian Investor Visa Advice For Wealthy Moms

Immigration is easy if you are affluent because many countries actually let you buy a passport. Italy offers the investor visa option that enables you to qualify for the residence status and eventually become a citizen. Although the road may sound long and daunting, it is the only option you have when you cannot get in through routes like marriage and descent. The effort is worthwhile for wealthy moms looking to bequeath Italian citizenship to their kids in the long run. You can click on this Mbersanilaw.com for more details on this immigration option. Here is some more valuable advice for wealthy moms looking for an Italian investor visa.

Evaluate your investment alternatives

Although money is seldom a concern for well-to-do mommies, you must spend it wisely. Immigration with an investor visa entails a hefty investment, so you should know what you need to bring. The good thing is that you have multiple alternatives to explore. These include-money with a clock

  • An innovative startup in Italy- €250,000
  • An established company- €500,000
  • A public welfare project- €1 million
  • Government bonds- €2 million

Be ready with proof of funds

You need not bring the money to Italy at the beginning of the investor visa process. Proof of funds suffices until you complete the nulla osta (certificate of no impediment) and consulate applications. Essentially, it is a bank statement showing you have sufficient funds to provide the committed investment. The statement is enough to get you through from start to end.

Get investor visa for loved ones without extra funding

As a mommy, you will probably want to move in with your loved ones, even if it costs a fortune. But you need not bring additional investment for your family members. Showing that you can support them financially during your stay in the country is enough to get them in with the residence status. No extra funding means you need not stress about the massive money requirements for family immigration.

Bring the funds along while landing in Italy

Perhaps, the most critical piece of advice for wealthy moms getting an Italian investor visa is to have the funds at hand while landing in Italy. You will have to deposit them within three months of obtaining the residence permit, which happens right after you enter the country. Not having funds to deposit puts your residence permit at risk, and all the hard work may go waste.

Prepare to invest for the long haul

Finally, you must prepare to invest the money for the long haul if you plan to stay in Italy for good. The residence permit converts to permanent residence after five years, and you become eligible for citizenship by naturalization after another five years. The only condition is to hold the original funds throughout the decade. It is a small price for the world’s most powerful passport.

The final piece of advice for obtaining an investor visa is to never go for it alone. Having an expert showing the way gives you an advantage, so you must bring them on board sooner than later.

Birth Story Expeirences

I have two wonderful, happy and healthy little men, however their entry into this world was anything but straightforward. I love to write which is why I started blogging.

However I can’t seem to bring myself to write my own boys birth stories, its still all too fresh in my head.  I often wonder why, envying women who seem to be able to take it all in their stride.  Was it something I did? Is there something wrong with me? Or was in medical negligence? Maybe ill never know.

I decided to speak to some fellow bloggers to share their birth stories.

Each one different yet each one equally magical.  Bringing a new life into the world is an experience ill probably never be able to convey properly into words.

Birth experiences

  • First up is Lisa who shares here own experience on her blog Irish Baby Fairy. Lisa is a mid-wife herself so I was very interested to read her story.  Uniquely she is able to give us perspectives from the both sides in the labor ward. A story well worth a read.
  • Next is Hayley who blogs at I am River. I just love that name, if and thats a big if, I ever have more kids I may need to steal this name.  The positivity in this post really resonates with me.
  • Lyndsay- Rose writes at My Family of Roses and talks about not having a birth plan on her second. Her first was premature but second time round it was a very different experience. Showing us how different birth experiences can be.
  • I just love the pure honesty in Georgina who writes at Gee Garnder post.  After a very difficult pregnancy her beautiful baby was born full term, healthy and happy with no complications.
  • Nicola who blogs at Mummy to Dex shares her own experience of the birth of Dexter.  This post is really detailed and gives a great insight into Dexters birth. Again a very informative post well worth a read.

I really do enjoy reading other peoples birth stories, its gives me hope that maybe just maybe if I rolled the dice one more time I may have a calmer, more straightforward birth. We will see!

Top tips for dealing with the warm weather for kids & babies

This week we have been fortuante enough to speak to an expert from LloydsPharmacy who very kindly took the time to share her expert advice and guidance on dealing with these unusually warm tempartures we are having here.  These tip are also excellent to have if you are jetting off this summer too.

1. Sunburn

My pair are blue eyed, blonde and pale so preventing sunburn is very important, Rebecca has set out her top tips to prevent sunburn below:

sports

Pic Credit: Pixabay

We all know that sunburn is a huge risk factor for skin cancer, but did you know that much of the UV damage that leads to skin cancer happens in the early years of life. All children are at risk of UV damage, even those who tan easily.

  • Wear sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher in adults and SPF 30 or higher in kids and reapply every TWO hours.
  • Stick to the shade where you can to limit your exposure to UV rays. Babies under 6 months should be kept in the shade as much as possible. Make sure the shade casts a dark shadow.
  • Cover up as much sun-exposed skin as possible and wear a wide-brimmed hat made of cloth, or other close-woven material to give shade to the face, neck, head and ears.
  • Don’t forget to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses, sun exposure over time can lead to cataracts and cancer.
  • These tips apply whether you’re at home or away, UV damage is just as harmful from Irish sun as abroad. We’re getting an unusually hot spell right now but everyone needs to take just as much care on cloudy but bright days – up to 90% of UV rays can pass through cloud.

2.  Dehydration

I am always very aware at getting liquids into the boys during this heat. Some tips from Rebecca include:

  • Water should be given to counteract dehydration in hot or humid weather and should be drunk before you get to the stage of feeling thirsty.
  • Oral rehydration solutions such as Dioralyte replace salts, as well as water, lost through sweating.
  • Kids should be encouraged to drink water or a sports drink before, during and after any exercise in hot weather.
  • Adults should remember that tea, coffee and other caffeine containing drinks are diuretics and can worsen rather than help dehydration. The same goes for another diuretic, alcohol!
  • Children in cars need special attention as temperatures in cars can reach dangerously high levels very quickly. Children should never be left in a parked car.
  • If a child suddenly becomes dizzy, nauseated or weak in hot weather, bring them inside or at least in the shade. Give them lots of water or a sports drink and cool them down with a tepid shower or a sponge bath and fan air over their moist skin. Seek medical attention if their symptoms get worse or last for more than an hour.
  • Also avoid sun in the middle of the day, ideally between 11 and 4pm as sunburn stops your body from cooling itself down properly. Wear loose, light clothing that will allow the sweat to evaporate by allowing air to flow around the skin. Avoid dark clothing as this absorbs more heat than light colours.

relexa Hotel Berlin – Family Travel Review

relexa Hotel Berlin – Our Review

Earlier in 2018 we visited the lovely city of Hamburg so I was very curious to see how similar or not Berlin was going to be.  Berlin was a very last minute decision for us. I unusually hadn’t done my months of research so in a panic booked the relexa Hotel mostly due it location. I like being central when travelling with kids. I peeked into Trip Advisor after booking and there were some mixed review so I was a tad nervous. I decided to go with it and off we went on a very early flight with the Grandparents in tow!

The Hotel

The relexa comprises 208 rooms decked out in a neutral colour scheme. The building itself it located down a quiet side street. There is a restaurant called Boulevard on site which serves a mix of international dishes as well as a bar and outdoor courtyard where you can eat or have a drink. Also on siste is relexa cooking which offers all kinds of cookery related demonstrations, classes and themed events. There is also a spa area with sauna, steam bath as well as a fitness and relaxation room.

The Location.

The relexa hotel commends a pretty impressive location in Berlin, and to my mind this is probably its biggest selling point. I can be a tad hard to please when it comes to location as I like central but quiet, walking distance within reason and a safe area. I’d prefer not to be totally reliant on public transport when travelling with kids. From the relexa hotel we could walk to all of the key attractions, it is situated between the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie. You are literally minutes for Potsdamer Platz with its array of eateries and bars and to the far side you have the Berlin Zoo and the German Technical Museum. We walked to all of the attractions we had wanted to do,  Legoland Discovery Centre, the Parliament Building, the Berlin Wall, Aqua Dom and more!

Despite being in the midst of everything it was really quiet and felt very safe. Another huge plus was the Lidl just around the corner. I had forgotten sunscreen and was very handy to pop around for that plus a few goodies for the kids before bed.

The Room

hotel room

Junior Suite Pic Credit: relexa Hotel

We had a Junior Suite which was totally adequate for our needs. They located my parents next door which was great as the kids were in and out to visit Nana and Grandad. I understand the hotel is going through some renovation work. My parent’s room was a lot newer and the décor was really nice.

hot air ballon

VIew from hotel room Pic Creit: Mamma Fairy Blog

Ours while a lot bigger was a little tired looking but spotlessly clean and lovely size for the four of us. The separate sitting room is a big plus when travelling with kids as you can watch some TV and chill while they are in bed. The Junior Suite comes with a small complimentary mini bar too. Very much appreciated.

We had a view of the hot air balloon directly infront of us and the Berlin TV tower just off to the right. The kids loved watching that balloon up and down. None of us had the nerve to actually go up on it!

The Facilities

The breakfast was very good and really set us up for the day. While it was busy it was replenished quickly and we always got a table. The selection was great with plenty for adults and the kids to choose from. We escaped one of the nights while the grandparents baby sat and had dinner in the hotel and drinks in the cocktail bar (my mouth is still watering for the Gin Fizz cocktails). The food was amazing. So fresh and tasty. Id go back for the food alone. This was totally unexpected as you really never know  with hotel food.

The outdoor courtyard was a lovely way to have a coffee or beer before retiring to the room in the evening after a busy day sightseeing.

We didn’t get a chance to try the Spa but there is always next time!

The Verdict

As I said above if location is top of your agenda you will have this here. Everything is so close and easily walkable even with the kids. The food was really good with great selection for adults and kids. The hotel is ideal for families and the rooms are a good size for a city hotel. WiFi was free and perfectly adequate for us. The staff were efficient not overly friendly but that fine with me! We have resolved to come back as three days really wants enough to see all this eclectic city has to offer. When we do come back we will be coming back here without a doubt. I usually like to try new places if we return to a city but this property suited us perfectly and lets face it why fit something that not broken!!

Mamma Fairy Insider tips

  • If budget permits go for the Junior Suite – lots of space, complimentary mini bar and bottled water replenished each day
  • Book the breakfast, you will be well feed for the day ahead
  • The parliament building is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Its free in but you need to book in advance, its 100% worth it and even the kids loved it.
  • We had a late flight departing Berlin so decided to wile aware a few hours a t the nearby German Technical museum. I can say hand on heart this is quite possible one of the best museums I have every visited. Incredible, really incredible. We were a party of ages 3 to 60+ and everybody enjoyed. The kids didn’t want to leave and that’s after spending 5 hours. Do it, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
  • Don’t bother with the paid upgraded wifi – the free one is totally fine.
  • Ask for a renovated room and one facing the city. The view of the TV Tower at night time is lovely

Your Guide to an Eco Friendly Period

This  month we have something a little different and hopefully very useful – .We are delighted to have Jackie Bolen a self confessed tree-hugging friend of the Earth guest posting this month. When not working on Reusable Menstrual Cups (https://reusablemenstrualcup.com/), she can often be found paddling the rivers, on top of a mountain, or drinking coffee around Vancouver, Canada. Her hope is that one day, a menstrual cup or cloth pad will be found in the hands of every single menstruating person in the world.

I have few regrets in life, but this is one of them…

I didn’t realize that there were eco friendly period options until I was in my early 30’s. I honestly thought that my two choices were disposable pads or tampons.   I’m not sure why I didn’t know this—maybe I was hanging around the wrong people, or maybe these products just weren’t as popular as they are now. Whatever the case, I’m happy that I made the switch, although I do regret all those wasted years (and money!).   I’ll talk about what’s wrong with traditional feminine hygiene products and then offer a couple of eco-friendly alternatives for you to consider.

What’s Wrong with Disposable Pads and Tampons?

Pads and tampons are expensive. According to the Huffington Post, people spend an average of 13 Pounds on pads or tampons each month. This can add up to thousands over a lifetime. According to that same article, only 6% of people in the UK are using a menstrual cup. This means that 94% of people are using disposables.   Estimates vary, but it’s thought that the average person produces 100-150 kg of waste during a lifetime from feminine hygiene products. These products, by their nature aren’t recyclable. 90% of disposable pads are non-biodegradable plastic, which will still be hanging around thousands of years from now.    This isn’t a huge amount of waste when compared to other things, but it’s not ideal especially when considering that there are far less wasteful options.

The final reason why disposables aren’t great is because they sometimes contain trace amounts of pesticides and other toxic chemicals. Although not found in huge quantities, repeated exposure to these things is thought to potentially have some serious side effects. There aren’t a lot of studies related to this, nor is there much information from the manufacturing companies about what exactly is in their products.

Overall, disposable pads and tampons are expensive, and also not great for the environment or our health. Thankfully, there are some cheaper, healthier, eco-friendly period options.

Reusable Option #1: Menstrual Cups

moon cup

Pic Credit: Pixabay

As only 6% of menstruating people in the UK use menstrual cup, you may not know what they are.   They are bell-shaped cylinders, usually made from medical grade silicone, and are designed to replace tampons. The best thing about them is that they’re reusable, and with proper care and cleaning, can last for 5-10 years.   A menstrual cup is obviously much better for the environment than thousands of pads or tampons, particularly if you have a heavy and/or long flow. There’s more good news—menstrual cups can often be recycled, depending on where you live.  Period cups cost around 20 pounds, which makes them slightly more expensive than disposable products in the short term. But when compared to the 13 pounds a month on disposables, you’ll be saving money in only a couple of months.

The final reason to consider making the switch to a menstrual cup is because they don’t contain chemicals and pesticides in them. Just be sure to get a top-quality menstrual cup that won’t degrade quickly and avoid the cheap ones from China.   To date, there has only been one reported case of toxic shock syndrome related to menstrual cup usage, unlike with tampons where there are thousands of cases.

If you live in the UK, an excellent option is the Brighton based MoonCup. It’s one of the oldest, most established menstrual cup companies in the world. Shipping is free and you can order directly from their website here. You’ll be well on your way to an eco-friendly period!

Or, consider the Lena Cup. Although it’s relatively new, it’s quickly become one of the most popular menstrual cups. It has some of the best user reviews on Amazon, and it’s often a little bit cheaper than something like the MoonCup.

Reusable Option #2: Cloth Menstrual Pads

The next eco-friendly period option is cloth menstrual pads. They are similar to disposable pads, except that they’re reusable. You just have to wash them with your regular laundry. The best ones are stain resistant, or are made from dark fabric.    Cloth pads cost around 5 pounds each, or you can make your own for cheaper. Like menstrual cups, they can last for 5-10 years and most people find that a set of 6 is enough to get through their period. Again, you’d be saving money by using reusable pads in only a couple of months when compared to disposables.   Cloth menstrual pads can go a long way towards reducing waste going to the landfill, particularly of the plastic variety. They are made from natural materials like charcoal, bamboo and cotton so once thrown away, they’ll biodegrade. I’ve even heard of people burying cloth pads in their garden once they’re done with them!    Finally, cloth pads don’t contain all the toxic chemicals and pesticides that the disposable ones do. Just be sure to wash them before use.

The best place to buy cloth pads is on Amazon. They have the full range of colours, styles and absorbency levels.

Ready to Make the Switch to Eco-Friendly Period Products?

Are you ready for some eco-friendly period awesome in your life? Congratulations! You’ll be joining an enlightened group of people who are excited that there is a better way to do periods. You’ll save thousands of dollars, produce a lot less plastic waste, and reduce your chemical load.

Small changes really do make a difference. Be part of the change.
