Free time? What’s that? Your guide to putting your feet up

Free time is a precious commodity which is rare in our hectic house.  No matter how hard I try I am really bad at making the effort to make time for myself?

If you do happen to find yourself with some free time, what should you do with it? It may have been so long since you’ve had any you have no idea. But don’t worry – read on for a little inspiration of how you can spend your free time. Or you could just dream about it instead…?

Treat your face

With the kids seemingly under control and you’ve managed to become unstuck from the oven you might even be able to take a little time and put some makeup on. You could slip on some anti-aging eye cream  or play around with some new eye shadows or even sit with a face mask on for ten minutes. Just enjoy being able to hear your own inner thoughts!

Reading

It might be a little obvious. But sometimes we forget how good it feels to pick up a book and get pulled straight back into a story. Whether it’s a fantasy novel, an old childhood favourite or a celebrity tell-tale book. There’s nothing wrong with disappearing for a couple of hours and diving head first into a book. It is one of those things that becomes a great investment in your time because it’s not just watching TV, or half-watching a film. You can purchase high quality glasses, a reading lamp, and a few first-editions to make the experience a little extra special. It’s a lovely part of getting ready for bed, when the kids are asleep and you’re not that tired yet, getting into bed and unwinding with a great book is one of those things that’s good for the soul.

One of the things I find really relaxing is loosing myself in a good documentary or series. I find it really helps me relax and forget what is bothering me. I recently saw Sam Haskell interviewed on his latest Netflix documentary series on Dolly Parton. It is exactly the kind of series I could wile away hours watching.

Go for a walk

Who says you have to stay cooped up indoors? You could really make a break for it and go for a walk around your favourite beauty spot, or even just around the block for some fresh air. Getting in a little cardio before you tackle that box of chocolates this evening will help you not feel as guilty.

Sleep

None of us are getting enough sleep, and the festive season can be both physically and mentally draining. So, if you get the chance try grabbing an extra forty winks and catching up on some much needed rest. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Rearrange your photos

If you have sleeves of photographs that are looking for homes, or you just haven’t gotten around to putting them into your albums yet, then why not do it now? You can even date them all and place them in chronological order. Looking back at the memories you’ve made over the year will certainly make you smile.

Listen

Why not try listening to a new audiobook? Or even a podcast on a subject your passionate about? Or how about a comedy set from your favourite comedian or just some of your favourite tunes that make you feel happy. You could even try listening to the nice, peaceful silence!

Have a bubble bath

Empty that whole bottle into the tub and have a nice long soak. You deserve it.

Winter Safety on Two Wheels

As a very strange and unusual summer draws to a close we began to consider the challenges of winter so there is  never a better time to highlight the importance of being aware of the changing road conditions in the winter weather. As a family we love getting out and about.  The Dada Fairy and the oldest man love their Saturday morning cycle.  Great way for the pair of them to spend time together as well as getting out and about in the fresh air.

However as the seasons change so to do the road conditions and it is especially important to be mindful of the appropriate safety precautions for the road conditions and that is whether you are on a motorbike or a pedal bike.

Some of the things we do differently in winter include:

  • Dressing for the weather – layer up being the best advice
  • Critically be visible, that’s having lights fitted on your bike. Wearing a hi-viz at all times.
  • Take good care of your bike making sure you check prior to each ride to ensure its road worthiness
  • Tell somebody your plans – just in case
  • Start easy – if you aren’t used to cycling I would start with smaller trips and build up the stamina. Trust me its not as easy as it looks!!!

As I have mentioned before, we farm very mountainous ground so in order to get around, my husband uses a hill motorbike. Ill be honest, at the beginning this terrified me but I know now safety for him is paramount. Some additional tips for motorcyclists include:

  • Check your tyres prior to ever journey
  • Visibility may be lower- signal earlier

  • Reduce your speed – road conditions can be much more hazardous in winter.
  • Check the weather before you set off – being mindful of wind, frost, fog etc.

However one thing I have learned over the years is despite taking every precaution you can, accidents can happen as unfortunately the behaviour of other road users is totally out of our hands. 1. Drink plenty of water

While there’s no hard evidence that drinking extra water will cure all skincare ills, it’s certainly true that drinking too little will leave you with rough, dull skin that’s lacking in elasticity. And very few people actually drink enough water to remain hydrated throughout the day.

When applying cleanser or water to your skin, take note of how you move your hands. Most people use a downwards motion, but pulling your skin down can lead to sagging. Using an upwards motion will take a while to get used to but your skin will thank you for it.

4. Moisturise regularly

Applying moisturiser is a vital aspect of skincare and something you should do daily, as it’s necessary to replenish the moisture and natural oils that are lost from your skin throughout the day.

If your skin type is closer to oily than normal, thick emollient products can clog your pores and make your skin look greasy. Instead, go for the lightweight formulas with non-comedogenic ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid. In addition, if you do have a skin condition like eczema, it is important to use an eczema cream for the most effective results. 

Whilst most care should be taken when moisturising the sensitive skin on our faces, don’t forget that you have skin all over! Pay special attention to your neck and chest as the skin in these areas is frequently damaged by exposure to the sun.

5. Use skincare products that contain natural ingredients

There are many harmful chemicals used in skincare products, from parabens that can disrupt hormones to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) that can cause irritation and trigger outbreaks.

While it should be said that not all natural ingredients are good for the skin, there are many natural alternatives to harsh chemicals that are safer to use on a daily basis.

While you may struggle to avoid all potentially toxic ingredients, it’s also worth seeking out products that have shorter lists of ingredients, as these tend to be kinder to our skin.

6. Eat healthy

7. Get enough sleep

If you’re not getting enough sleep you’re much more likely to suffer from diminished skin barrier function and dehydrated skin, both of which contribute to a dull or grey complexion. Everybody is physiologically different so this isn’t a rule that should apply to everyone, but it’s recommended that you get at least seven hours sleep a night, with eight being preferable.

8. Relax
