Best Tourist Spots in St. John

St. John, the capital of Newfoundland, is set on the hillsides overlooking one of the finest natural harbors globally. This setting is breathtaking and embraces its harbor closely, so shops arrive and depart in the very heart of its residential and commercial center. One of the oldest cities, St. John, has been a base for fishing boats since the 1500s.

Most of the tourist spots on St. John stem from the city’s interesting and long history, but several of the best attractions will bring you closer to wildlife and nature. Its massive shoreline is ideal for harboring different sea birds species and animals. Below are the best tourist spots in St. John.

The Signal Hill National Historic Site and Cabot Tower

One of St. John’s top places to visit is the Signal Hill National Historic site, overlooking the harbor’s entrance. It gives a 360-degree view encompassing the sea, harbor, and city. Besides, you can study the history and importance of Signal Hill and the harbor at the visitor desk. You can also explore and learn more about the ruins of the Queen’s Battery, designed in the 1700s.

To crown the hill, Cabot Tower was started in 1898 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage. You’ll find the Guglielmo Marconi and the first transatlantic wireless broadcast. At this tower, Marconi received the first-ever transmission from England in 1901.

During the summer, the Signal Hill Tatoo recreates military drills from the 1800s, with cannons, musket fire, and marching bands to commemorate the last battle fought in 1762.

This commemoration is normally performed for four days per week and is one of the popular attractions for families visiting St. John.

The beautiful little fishing community clustered at the shore of an inlet has become a popular destination for local craftspeople and artisans, welcoming visitors to their workshops and studios. You can purchase quality and charming gifts. The oldest house in British Canada, designed in 1740, still exists within the fort.

Basilica of St. John the Baptist

The Roman Catholic basilica is one of the city’s most architecturally crucial buildings. Built between 1842 and 1892, it signifies a Latin cross with slender twin towers towering 46 meters. Its most significant features are the appealing ornate gold-leaf ceiling and amazing statues.

In one of the transepts is the statue of Our Lady Fatima, a gift from Portuguese sailors who survived being shipwrecked. The Basilica is a National Historic Site
